포스코그룹은 임직원 급여의 1%를 기부해 조성한 ‘포스코1%나눔재단’을 통해 2020년부터 국가보훈부와 함께 ‘희망날개’ 사업을 추진해왔다. 국가를 위해 헌신한 이들을 잊지 않겠다는 임직원들의 감사와 존경의 뜻을 담은 사회공헌 프로그램이다.

‘희망날개’ 사업은 전상·공상 국가유공자의 자유로운 이동과 독립적인 생활을 지원하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 단순히 첨단 보조기구를 보급하는 데 그치지 않고, 수혜자의 생활 패턴과 신체 상태를 정밀 분석해 맞춤형 보조기구를 제공한다. 이후 전문 재활 치료사와 매칭해 기기 적응 훈련과 재활 관리를 병행하는 등 일상 복귀까지 밀착 지원하고 있다.

이 같은 지원 성과는 스포츠 분야에서도 나타나고 있다. 재단의 첨단 보조기구를 지원받은 일부 국가유공자들이 국내 장애인체육대회와 세계상이군인체육대회에서 금메달을 획득하는 등 재활 의지를 성과로 이어가고 있다.

장인화 이사장은 협약식에서 “나라를 위해 희생을 감수한 영웅들의 일상에 제약이 생기지 않기를 바라는 마음”이라며 “희망날개 사업이 국가유공자들이 사회의 구성원으로 다시 당당히 걸어 나갈 수 있도록 돕는 든든한 지지대가 되길 바란다”고 밝혔다.

권오을 국가보훈부 장관은 “민간 기업 임직원이 앞장서 영웅들을 예우하는 문화가 확산되는 것은 매우 고무적인 일”이라며 “포스코1%나눔재단의 첨단 보조기구 지원사업은 ‘일상 속 보훈’을 실천하는 모범 사례”라고 평가했다. 국가보훈부는 2024년 재단의 사회공헌 성과를 높이 평가해 보훈문화상을 수여한 바 있다.
