【브레이크뉴스 대구】이성현 기자=주낙영 경주시장이 내년 6월 있을 지방선거에서 경주시장 3선에 도전할 뜻을 내비쳤다. 다만, 정치권에서는 여전히 이철우 경북도지사의 투병 상황 및 정치적 상황에 따라 주 시장의 행보는 바뀔 수 있다고 전망했다.

주낙영 경주시장은 5일 대구경북인터넷기자협회 산하 ‘TK100 포럼‘ 주최 토론회에 참석해 ’APEC 경주‘의 성공을 자신있게 점쳤다. 

행사의 성공으로 인한 내년 지방선거 행보에 영향이 있을 것이냐는 질문에 그는 “4년전 APEC 유치전에 나선 것은 지방선거와는 관계가 없었다. 지방선거를 위해 유치전에 뛰어들었던 것 아니다. 지사나 저나 최선을 다해 유치에 성공했고, 유치했으면 역대 가장 성공한 대회로 치러서 세계로 (경주와 경북이) 뻗어나가는데 기여하고자 한다”며 “지방선거에 관해 얘기하기는 아직 이르다. 최선 다해 APEC 성공 주력하고, 성공후 행보 이야기를 하는데 큰데 나오는데 아직 생각 없다. 도자사 선거의 경우, 지사님이 열심히 잘하고 있고 건강도 회복 됐고, 지사님이 진심으로 잘 되길 바란다”고 도지사 출마설을 간접적으로 부인했다. 

그는 이어 “무언가를 생각할 때 우리 같은 공직자들은 개인의 영달보다는 내가 남들보다 잘할 수 있는 자격이 있는가를 먼저 생각해야 한다. 도청 근무해 봐서 도지사 역할 잘 안다. 도지사 자격과 역량에 대해서 잘 안다. 내가 과연 그 업무를 하기에 역량을 갖췄는지 생각해 봐야 하는데, 아직은 미치지 못하고 있다고 생각한"면서 "경주시장으로 해놓은 일 많고, 가능하면 경주시장 도전해 마무리 지어서 대한민국 대표하는 문화관광도시, 산업도시로 발돋움시키는 희망을 가지고 있다. 지금 있는 자리에서 제대로 된 업적과 성적 내서 기여하는 것이 더 중요하다고 생각한다”고 거듭 강조했다. 

그럼에도 정치권은 APEC 성공이 가져오는 경주시장으로서의 입지는 25만여 명의 작은 소도시를 뛰어넘는 글로벌한 수준이라는 점에서 광역 단체장 도전을 노려볼만하다는 분석이다. 경주지역 한 언론인은 “현 도지사와의 개인적인 친분 상황, 또 정치적 상황이 남아 있긴 하지만, 궁극적으로 이철우 도지사의 3선 도전 여부에 따라 주낙영 경주시장의 도전 여부도 상황이 달라질 수 있다”며 경주시장 3선 도전을 굳혔다는 주장에는 동의하지 않았다. 다만, 그는 “주 시장은 이철우 도지사가 3선에 뜻이 있다고 하면 굳이 도지사 출마를 강행할 생각은 없는 것으로 파악하고 있다”고 덧붙였다. 

경주지역 정치권 관계자 역시 본지와 통화에서 같은 맥락의 발언으로 “주 시장이 말을 아낀다. 일단 경주로서는 APEC 성공 개최에 모든 것을 걸어야 한다. 글로벌 도시로서, 대한민국 문화 도시의 새로운 선두 도시로 나아가기 위해서는 이번 행사가 경주에게는 매우 중요하다. 주낙영 시장의 생각이나 향후 행보 역시 이 행사가 끝나고 난 뒤 봐야 할 것이다. 지금은 여기에 모든 것을 걸고 있다”고 말했다.

I've accomplished a lot as mayor of Gyeongju, and if possible, I hope to run for mayor and complete it, helping Gyeongju grow into a leading cultural, tourism, and industrial city in Korea. I believe it's more important to contribute by achieving real results and achieving results in my current position."

Nevertheless, political circles believe that the success of APEC, which will give Gyeongju a global presence beyond its small city of 250,000, makes it worth pursuing a run for mayor of a metropolitan city. A Gyeongju-area journalist disagreed with the claim that Mayor Joo Nak-young has decided to run for a third term, saying, "While his personal relationship with the current governor and the political situation remain, ultimately, the decision on whether or not Governor Lee Cheol-woo will run for a third term could determine whether or not he will." However, he added, "If Governor Lee Cheol-woo expresses interest in running for a third term, Mayor Joo has no intention of forcing a gubernatorial run."

A Gyeongju-area political source echoed this sentiment in a phone call with our newspaper, stating, "Mayor Joo is being reserved. For now, Gyeongju must stake everything on hosting a successful APEC. This event is crucial for Gyeongju to emerge as a global city and a new leader in cultural cities in Korea. Mayor Joo Nak-young's thoughts and future actions will have to be assessed after the event. For now, everything is being staked on this."
