신천지예수교회는 지난 5월부터 질병관리청에 코로나19 백신 및 치료제 개발을 위해 혈장 공여에 참여하겠다는 의사를 밝히고, 6월 초 본격적으로 협의를 진행했다.

그 결과 지난 7월 13일 ~ 17일 1차 단체 혈장 공여를 진행했고 이어 8월 27일 ~ 9월 4일 까지 2차 단체 혈장 공여를 마쳤다. 현재까지 단체 및 개인으로 혈장 공여를 완료한 성도는 총 1천700여 명으로 전체 혈장 공여자 2천30여 명의 80%가 넘는 것으로 알려졌다.

혈장치료제는 혈장을 추출해 다양한 항체가 들어있는 면역 단백질을 분획해 만든 고면역글로불린으로, 코로나19 완치자의 혈장 공여가 없으면 생산 자체가 어려운 만큼 혈장 공여자 확보가 중요하다. 특히 코로나19 장기화와 지속적인 감염 발생으로 치료제 개발이 중요해져 완치자의 혈장 확보가 시급한 상황이다.

신천지예수교회 측은 “단체 혈장 공여가 진행되기 전 성도 개별적으로 혈장 공여에 참여했지만 기간을 두고 의료기관을 두 차례 방문하는 등 많은 시간이 소요된다는 것을 확인하고 질병관리청 측과 신속하게 진행될 수 있는 방안 등을 논의했다”며 “지난 2월 많은 확진자가 발생하며 국민께 심려를 끼쳐드린 만큼 코로나19 종식에 기여해야 한다는 마음이 컸다. 완치자들이 할 수 있는 가장 가치 있는 일이라고 판단했다”고 설명했다.

이날 현장에는 권준욱 국립보건연구원장 겸 중앙방역대책본부 부본부장을 비롯한 질병관리청 관계자, 대한적십자사 혈액관리본부 관계자, 허부자 대구경북 혈액원장, GC녹십자 관계자, 대구시 관계자 등이 방문해 공여자들에게 응원과 격려를 보냈다.   

신천지예수교회는 단체 혈장 공여가 순조롭게 진행될 수 있도록 자원봉사단을 꾸려 업무를 지원하고 있다. 장소가 도심에서 떨어진 만큼 편의를 위해 4대의 셔틀버스도 자체 운영한다. 이번 3차 단체 혈장 공여자 외에 지원하는 봉사자는 하루에 130명이다.

신천지예수교회 관계자는 “저희들은 공여자로 참여하고 있지만 코로나19 극복을 위해 방역당국, 대한적십자사, 대구경북혈액원, 대구광역시 등이 다 같이 협력하고 있고 그 노력과 헌신에 존경을 표한다. 혈장 공여를 통해 코로나19를 극복하는 힘은 포용, 사랑, 단합에 있음을 깨닫고 배웠다”며 “완치 성도들의 혈장 공여로 코로나19 극복과 혈장치료제 개발이 가속화되기를 기대한다”고 말했다.
