국립낙동강생물자원관 연구진은 전남 무주의 금강 구량천에서 마실리아 속 신종 미생물을 분리하였으며, 이 균주가 보라색 천연 색소인 비올라세인을 합성하는 것을 확인했다.

비올라세인은 항균, 항바이러스 및 항암 등 인체에 이로운 생리활성을 갖는 물질로 최근 산업적 관심이 증가되고 있다.

연구진은 신종 미생물의 유전체를 완전 해독하여 기존에 알려진 마실리아 속 미생물 82종의 유전체 정보와 비교했으며, 그 결과, 비올라세인 생산에 관여하는 유전자가 해당 신종을 포함하여 총 6종에서만 존재함이 확인했다.

김의진국립낙동강생물자원관 원핵생물연구팀장은 “앞으로 다양한 담수 원핵생물 유래 천연 색소에 대한 연구를 수행하여 식품과 화장품 등 바이오 산업에활용될 수 있는 기반을 마련하겠다”라고 말했다.
