【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=행복북구문화재단이 전통 목각을 현대적으로 재해석한 김성수 작가의 개인전을 선보인다고 15일 밝혔다.
2025 EAC 작가 지원 프로젝트의 마지막 전시 김성수 작가의 개인전 '사람을 만나다 Ⅷ'는 오는 22일부터 10월 11일까지 어울아트센터 갤러리 명봉에서 진행된다.
김성수 작가는 전통 목각인형과 민속 조각의 조형성을 현대적으로 풀어내며 삶과 죽음, 희망과 자유에 대한 메시지를 조각 언어로 담아내는 작가다. 조선 시대 장례문화 속 '꼭두'를 현대적 시각으로 재해석해 오늘의 사회와 개인에게 새로운 의미를 제시한다.
이번 전시에는 '사람을 만나다', '꽃을 든 남자', '사람과 꽃과 새' 등 대표 연작들이 선보인다. 엔진 톱날로 나무를 투박하게 깎아내고 색을 입혀 원시적이면서도 생명력 넘치는 형상을 구현했다.
작품 속 촌부의 모습, 귀신을 쫓는 형상, 천사 같은 작은 인형들은 인간이 지닌 희망과 사랑, 안녕에 대한 기원을 담아낸다. 김 작가는 "민속 조각의 원시성과 직관성을 현대적으로 풀어내며, 그 속에서 현대인의 내면에 잠재된 꿈과 자유, 희망을 환기하고자 한다"고 말했다.
박정숙 대표이사는 "이번 전시는 전통 속 민속 조각을 현대적 언어로 재해석해 인간에 대한 성찰과 희망을 나누는 소중한 기회가 될 것"이라며 "앞으로도 지역 예술가들의 전통과 실험을 조명하며 관람객과 깊이 소통할 수 있는 전시를 이어가겠다"고 밝혔다.

Kim Seong-su interprets the formative qualities of traditional wooden dolls and folk sculptures in a contemporary way, conveying messages of life and death, hope, and freedom through sculptural language. He reinterprets the "kokdu," a traditional Joseon Dynasty funeral ritual, from a contemporary perspective, offering new meaning to today's society and individuals.
This exhibition features representative series such as "Meeting People," "Man Holding Flowers," and "People, Flowers, and Birds." By roughly carving wood with a chainsaw and then applying color, Kim Seong-su creates primitive yet vibrant forms.
The rural villagers, ghost-chasing figures, and angelic dolls in the artwork embody human desires for hope, love, and well-being. Artist Kim stated, "I seek to interpret the primitiveness and intuitiveness of folk sculptures in a contemporary way, and through them, to evoke the dreams, freedom, and hope latent within modern people."
CEO Park Jeong-sook stated, "This exhibition will be a valuable opportunity to reinterpret traditional folk sculptures in a contemporary language, sharing reflections on humanity and hope.
