소방본부에 따르면 독도에서 근무중인 항로표지관리원은 복통으로 상비약을 먹고 회복을 기다렸으나, 상태가 악화돼 독도경비대에서 긴급이송을 요청해 소방헬기로 신속하게 포항시 소재 종합병원 의료진에게 인계되었으며 현재 입원 치료중이다.
한편, 경북소방항공대에서는 95년 창단 이후 울릉도 및 경상북도 내 응급환자에 대하여 587회 출동하여 긴급 이송 하는 등 총 2,655건의 인명구조, 구급, 화재출동 등의 임무를 안전하게 수행해 오고 있으며,
특히, 지난 한 해에는 의료시설이 열악한 울릉도 지역에서 발생한 응급환자 20명을 육지의 병원으로 안전하게 이송했다.
김종근 경북소방본부장은 “해상 비행 시 명확한 참고점이 없어 시각비행이 어렵고, 해양기상 특성상 기상상황을 예측하기 어려워 헬기운항에 많은 제약이 따르지만 평소 해상비행훈련 등을 통하여 도민들에게 365일 24시간 항공 구조·구급서비스 제공에 최선을 다하겠다.”고 밝혔다.
