한국수력원자력(사장 정재훈, 이하 한수원)은 발전소 주변 지역 및 신규 양수 발전소 건설 지역 대상으로‘2021년도 아톰공학교실’을 시행한다고 25일 밝혔다.

한국수력원자력에 따르면 올해 아톰공학교실은 22일 울진 죽변초등학교, 23일 경주 화랑마을을 시작으로 총 19회 시행할 계획이다.

‘아톰공학교실’은 상대적으로 교육 인프라가 낙후된 지역의 교육 격차 해소를 위한 한수원의 대표적인 인재육성 사회공헌사업이다. 

‘아톰공학교실’은 초등학생 대상 공학 체험형 프로그램인‘아톰공학캠프’와 중학생 대상 공학기술 강연인‘찾아가는 공학차’등으로 구성된다. 

한수원은 공학에 대한 관심과 이해도를 높이기 위해 프로그램에 참여한 학교를 대상으로 공학도서도 지급한다. 

최근 3년간 프로그램의 수혜를 받은 학생은 5천500여명으로 교육 인프라가 부족한 지역 학생들에게 공학 교육의 장을 제공하고 있어 좋은 반응을 얻고 있다.
