포스코홀딩스는 지난 4일 대전 유성구에 위치한 한국지질자원연구원(이하 지질자원연) 본원에서 김기수 포스코홀딩스 미래기술연구원장과 이평구 지질자원연 원장 등이 참석한 가운데 ‘핵심광물 기술 공동개발을 위한 업무협약(MOU)’을 체결했다고 7일 밝혔다.

이번 협약은 글로벌 핵심광물 공급망 안정성 확보가 시급한 과제로 떠오른 가운데 이뤄졌다. 미국의 광물 공급 협정 요구와 중국의 수출 통제 조치 등 지정학적 리스크가 고조되면서, 산업계 전반에 걸쳐 핵심광물 확보 경쟁이 가속화되고 있다.

양 기관은 이번 협약을 통해 ▲디지털·AI 기반의 자원탐사 및 평가 기술 공동개발 ▲선광·제련·정련 등 추출 기술 고도화 ▲저품위 자원 활용 기술 개발 ▲국내외 네트워크 및 전문인력 교류 확대 등 다양한 분야에서 협력체계를 강화해 나갈 계획이다.

김기수 포스코홀딩스 미래기술연구원장은 “지질자원연과의 협력을 통해 리튬, 희토류 등 전략 광물의 안정적 공급망을 구축하고, 핵심 기술의 조기 확보로 국내 산업의 글로벌 경쟁력 제고에 기여하겠다”고 말했다.

포스코그룹은 염호 및 광산 투자 확대를 통해 리튬 원료를 안정적으로 확보하고 있으며, 국내외에서 수산화리튬 생산 체계를 구축해 첨단산업 공급망 강화에 박차를 가하고 있다. 또한, 북남미 리튬 염호와 호주 광산 등 우량 자원에 대한 추가 확보와 더불어 제품 공정 및 기술 혁신을 통해 사업경쟁력을 지속 강화한다는 전략이다.

한편, 1948년 설립된 지질자원연은 국내 유일의 지질자원 전문 정부출연연구기관으로, 광물 자원 탐사부터 활용까지 전주기 기술개발 역량을 기반으로 산업계와의 협력을 확대하며 핵심광물 기술 혁신을 선도하고 있다.

POSCO Holdings will join hands with the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) to jointly develop core mineral technology, which is considered essential resources for advanced industries such as secondary batteries, renewable energy, and semiconductors.

POSCO Holdings announced on the 7th that it signed a ‘MOU for joint development of core mineral technology’ at the headquarters of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) located in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon on the 4th, with the attendance of Kim Ki-soo, Director of the POSCO Holdings Future Technology Research Institute, and Lee Pyeong-gu, Director of KIGAM.

This agreement was made amid the urgent task of securing the stability of the global core mineral supply chain. As geopolitical risks such as the US’s demand for a mineral supply agreement and China’s export control measures intensify, competition to secure core minerals is accelerating across industries.

Through this agreement, the two organizations plan to strengthen their cooperation system in various fields such as ▲joint development of digital and AI-based resource exploration and evaluation technology ▲advancing extraction technology such as mineral processing, smelting, and refining ▲developing low-grade resource utilization technology ▲expanding domestic and international networks and exchanges of experts.

Kim Ki-soo, head of the Future Technology Research Institute of POSCO Holdings, said, “Through cooperation with the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, we will establish a stable supply chain for strategic minerals such as lithium and rare earth elements, and contribute to enhancing the global competitiveness of domestic industries by securing key technologies early.”

The POSCO Group is stably securing lithium raw materials through expanding investments in salt lakes and mines, and is accelerating the strengthening of the supply chain for advanced industries by establishing a lithium hydroxide production system at home and abroad. In addition, the strategy is to continuously strengthen business competitiveness through product process and technological innovation, along with additional acquisition of excellent resources such as lithium salt lakes in North and South America and Australian mines.

Meanwhile, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, established in 1948, is the only government-funded research institute specializing in geological resources in Korea. Based on its full-cycle technology development capabilities from mineral resource exploration to utilization, it is expanding cooperation with the industry and leading innovation in core mineral technologies.
