이강덕 시장은 앞으로 경상북도 23개 시장·군수를 대표해 대한민국 시장·군수·구청장협의회 공동회장단으로서 지역의 목소리를 대변하게 된다.

또한, 경북시장군수협의회 운영과 함께 경북을 대표해 중앙정부와 연계된 각종 현안에 대해 의견을 개진하고, 지방자치의 건전한 발전을 도모하기 위한 정책 입안 및 개선사항 건의 등을 추진한다.

특히, 23개 시·군 간 상호 소통과 교류·협력을 증진하고, 공동 관심사에 대한 협의와 대책을 강구하며, 상생 발전을 위한 사업을 발굴·추진해 나가는 역할을 수행하게 된다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “민선 8기를 시작하는 중요한 시점에서 협의회장을 맡게 돼 막중한 책임감을 느낀다”며, “여러 시장 군수님과 이철우 지사님과 함께 힘을 모아 지방 소멸 위기를 극복하고 지역 주도 균형발전을 위한 동력을 마련하는 데 혼신의 힘을 다하겠다”라고 말했다.

한편, 이날 경북시장군수협의회 총무에는 손병복 울진군수가 선출됐으며, 회장단 임기는 2년(민선 8기 전반기)이다.
