이번 등불 축제는 천년 동안 이어온 한·중·일 3국 문화의 화합(和)과 이야기(話), 평화를 밝히는(華) 동아시아 등불을 주제로 펼쳐진다.

경주엑스포대공원은 신라 천년의 이야기를 지닌 ‘경주의 랜드마크이자 대한민국을 대표하는 문화테마파크로 단순한 등불 전시가 아니라 빛과 소리와 이야기가 어우러진 체험형 테마파크로 탈바꿈하게 된다.

축제는 ‘빛의 화원’, ‘평화의 종소리’, ‘이야기 화원’. ‘만남의 화원’ 등 4개의 테마별 공간으로 꾸며진다.

먼저 경주엑스포대공원 입구에서 경주타워에 이르는 주작대로(L=150M)에는 ‘빛의 화원’이 조성된다. 입구에는 등불 테마파크 진입을 알리는 대형아치가 설치되고, 한·중·일 삼국의 전통 등불문화를 등과 조명으로 표현한 삼국의 빛 ‘루미나리에 등불로드’가 조성진다.

경주엑스포대공원 전역에서 이뤄지는 ‘만남의 화원’은 삼국의 전통 등을 들고, 공원의 다양한 공간을 걸으며 자연스럽게 역사체험 및 문화적 다양성을 경험할 수 있는 힐링 야행 프로그램이 운영된다. 공원 입구에 야행 등 렌탈 및 반납대가 설치된다.

이외에도 경주타워 앞 계림지에는 코로나 극복을 기원하는 소망과 새로운 미래에 대한 소망을 담아 물에 띄우는 ‘계림지 연꽃등 전시’가 진행된다. 계림지 일원에서는 동아시아 3국의 전통 등을 직접 만들어 보는 전통체험 ‘나만의 DIY 등불 공예체험’도 가능하다.
