고령군에 따르면 이날 멜론을 재배하는 농업인 허정원(51)씨가 파파야멜론을 수확하며 성산면의 첫 멜론 수확 소식을 알렸다.

파파야 멜론은 3월에서 5월 사이에만 재배되는 제철 과일이며 참외의 높은 당도와 향에 멜론의 부드러운 식감이 더해져 최고의 고당도 디저트 과일로 사랑받고 있다.

처음에는 참외의 아삭함을, 후숙 후에는 멜론의 부드러움을 맛볼 수 있는 매력적인 과일이다. 특히 베타카로틴과 엽산이 풍부해 면역력 개선에 효과가 있고, 섬유질을 다량함유하여 장건강 개선에 도움을 준다.

날씨가 따뜻하고 일조량이 좋은 성산은 멜론 생산에 최적의 조건을 가지고 있으며, 생산된 멜론의 당도와 식감이 뛰어나 인기가 많다.

이번에 첫 출하된 성산멜론은 17~18brix의 높은 당도를 자랑하고 있으며 2kg당 1만 9천원의 가격으로 인터넷 쇼핑몰 ‘허가네 메론’과 직거래를 통하여 판매된다.

3월 중순부터는 본격적으로 성산면 파파야 멜론이 출하되어 전국 백화점, 대형마트 등에서도 소비자를 찾아갈 예정이다.
