이번 행사는 지난 2025년 2월 18일, 고령이 대한민국 다섯 번째 고도(古都)로 새롭게 지정된 것을 기념하고, 대가야의 찬란한 역사와 문화적 가치를 대내외에 널리 알리기 위한 자리로 마련됐다.

고령은 가야사 최대 전성기를 이끈 대가야의 중심지로, 지산동 고분군(유네스코 세계유산)을 비롯해 궁성지, 주산성, 토기가마, ‘대왕명’ 토기 등 다양한 유·무형의 역사문화 자산을 보유한 도시다. 이러한 역사성과 학술적 가치를 인정받아 2004년 제정된 「고도 보존 및 육성에 관한 특별법」 시행 이후 20년 만에 신규 고도로 지정됐다.

이날 기념식은 군립가야금연주단의 병창 ‘용천검’을 시작으로, 소리꾼 김산옥의 판소리, 캘리그래피 작가 김소영의 멋글씨 시연 등 풍성한 식전 행사가 펼쳐졌다. 이어 고도 지정의 의미를 담은 영상 상영과 주민 축하 메시지, 미디어 퍼포먼스 ‘더 히어로’, 전통무용 ‘화관무’ 축하공연, 고도 지정 선포식과 지정서 전달식이 순차적으로 진행됐다.

기념식에는 이남철 고령군수를 비롯해 최응천 국가유산청장, 경북도 및 고도 지정 도시인 경주·공주·부여·익산 등의 관계자, 인근 지자체장, 관내 기관단체장, 군 의원, 지역 주민 등 총 700여 명이 참석해 고도 지정을 축하했다.

이남철 군수는 “이번 고도 지정은 고령군민 모두의 오랜 염원이자, 대가야 1,500년 역사에 대한 국가적 인정”이라며, “역사문화자산을 체계적으로 보존하고, 고령만의 정체성을 반영한 도시 브랜드를 구축해 고령 발전의 전환점으로 삼겠다”고 강조했다.

고령군은 향후 고도 시행계획 수립, 정체성 복원 프로젝트, 국가유산 보존관리 강화 등을 통해 역사문화도시로서의 정체성을 확립하고, 군민 삶의 질 향상과 지역경제 활성화를 동시에 추진할 계획이다.

Goryeong-gun (Governor Lee Nam-cheol) held a grand ‘Goryeong Ancient Capital Designation Commemoration Ceremony’ at Daegaya Culture Nuri on June 9.

This event was held to commemorate the new designation of Goryeong as the fifth ancient capital of the Republic of Korea on February 18, 2025, and to widely publicize the splendid history and cultural value of Daegaya both domestically and internationally.

Goryeong is the center of Daegaya, which led the golden age of Gaya history, and is a city with various tangible and intangible historical and cultural assets, including the Jisan-dong Ancient Tombs (UNESCO World Heritage), the palace site, Jusanseong Fortress, pottery kilns, and ‘Great King’s Name’ pottery. In recognition of this historical and academic value, it was designated as a new ancient city 20 years after the enactment of the Special Act on Preservation and Promotion of Ancient City in 2004.

The commemorative ceremony on this day began with the military gayageum ensemble's "Yongcheongeom", followed by pansori by singer Kim San-ok and a calligraphy demonstration by calligrapher Kim So-young. This was followed by a video screening containing the meaning of the ancient city designation, congratulatory messages from residents, a media performance "The Hero," a congratulatory performance of the traditional dance "Hwagwanmu," and a declaration ceremony and certificate presentation ceremony for the ancient city designation.

Approximately 700 people attended the ceremony, including Lee Nam-cheol, the mayor of Goryeong County, Choi Eung-cheon, the head of the National Heritage Administration, officials from Gyeongbuk Province and the ancient city-designated cities of Gyeongju, Gongju, Buyeo, and Iksan, heads of nearby local governments, heads of local organizations, county council members, and local residents, to congratulate the ancient city designation.

Governor Lee Nam-cheol emphasized, “This designation of a city as a historic site is a long-standing wish of all Goryeong residents and a national recognition of the 1,500-year history of Daegaya,” and “We will systematically preserve historical and cultural assets and establish a city brand that reflects Goryeong’s unique identity, making it a turning point for Goryeong’s development.”

Goryeong plans to establish its identity as a historical and cultural city through the establishment of a city implementation plan, identity restoration project, and strengthening of national heritage preservation and management, and to simultaneously promote the improvement of the quality of life of the residents and the revitalization of the local economy.
