(재)문화엑스포(이사장 이철우 경북도지사)에 따르면 김창준 이사장은 20일, 21일 1박 2일 일정으로 경주시를 방문해 주낙영 경주시장과 환담을 갖고, 경주엑스포대공원 등 지역 내 주요 사적지를 둘러봤다.

김창준 미래한미재단 이사장은 미국 연방의회 3선 하원의원 출신으로 한국과 미국을 오가며 양국의 정치와 문화교류에 힘쓰고 있는 인물로 이번 방문은 한국과 미국의 문화와 관광 등 지방 교류 활성화에 대한 소통의 차원으로 진행됐다.

이날 양동마을과 황룡사역사문화관, 월정교, 불국사 등을 차례로 방문하고 경주엑스포대공원을 찾아 경주타워와 솔거미술관 등을 살펴보며 다양한 콘텐츠를 체험했다.

솔거미술관에서는 박대성 화백을 만나 함께 전시관을 둘러보고 직접 그림에 대한 자세한 설명과 작품세계에 대해 전해 듣고 감탄을 이었다.

또 주낙영 경주시장과 8세기 서라벌의 모습을 영상으로 구현한 경주타워 ‘신라천년, 미래천년’ 전시와 서라벌의 모습을 축소해 복원한 신라왕경 미니어처를 보며 경주의 역사와 현재의 발전사항 등에 대해 이야기를 나눴다.

김창준 이사장은 “정치활동을 하면서 세계 여러 나라의 역사문화를 접했지만, 경주와 경주엑스포대공원의 문화 콘텐츠가 세계적으로도 충분히 경쟁력과 매력을 갖고 있어 인상적이다”며 “관광 등 다양한 교류가 이뤄질 수 있도록 미국에 알리겠다”고 말했다.

김창준 미래한미재단 이사장은 한국계 미국인으로는 최초로 미국 연방하원의원에 당선돼 103대에서부터 105대까지 3선 의원으로 활동했다. 이밖에 미 국무부 외교행정비서관과 다이아몬드바 시장을 역임하는 등 미국 정치계의 대표적인 한인으로 손꼽힌다.

현재는 ‘김창준 미래한미재단’과 ‘김창준 아카데미’ 등을 운영하며 한국과 미국의 정치와 문화, 경제 등 다양한 교류 활성화를 위한 활동을 이어가고 있다.
