【브레이크뉴스 경주】박영재 기자=한국원자력환경공단(이사장 차성수)은 지난 13일 경주 본사에서 페카 메초(Pekka Metso) 주한 핀란드대사, 베사 라까니에미(Vesa LAKANIEMI) 핀란드 에우라요키 시장과 지역 주민간간담회를 개최했다고 밝혔다.

핀란드 에우라요키는 세계 최초로 고준위방폐장이 건설되고 있는 곳으로 베사 라까니에미 시장은 12일부터 15일까지 원자력환경공단을 비롯 경주시, 울주군 등 원전지역 지자체, 지역 주민들과 간담회를 가지고 고준위방폐장 국민 소통방안, 수용성 확보 노력 등 관심사를 논의 할 예정이다.

경주지역 주민과 간담회에서 베사 라까니에미시장은 방폐물 사업은 투명한 소통과 정보공개를 통한 신뢰구축이 무엇보다 중요하다고 강조했다.

베사 라까니에미시장은 방한기간 중 핀란드의 고준위방폐장 부지선정 과정과 주민소통, 수용성확보 성공요인, 원전과 방폐장의 경제 파급효과 등의 경험을 들려줄 예정이다.

핀란드는 법률과 의회의 결정을 바탕으로 에우라요키시 올킬루오토에 2016년부터 세계 최초로 고준위 방사성 폐기물처분장을 지하 450미터 깊이에 건설하고 있으며, 2025년부터 본격 운영할 예정이다.

또한 에우라요키시에는 원전 운영사인 TVO, 방폐물관리 전담기관인 POSIVA가 소재해 있으며 3기의 원자력발전소와 중저준위방폐물 처분시설을 운영하고 있다.

핀란드의 고준위 방사성폐기물 운반·저장,부지평가, 처분 등 관련 기술은 세계 최고로 평가받고 있다.

차성수 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 “핀란드의 경험을 타산지석으로 삼아특별법의 조속한 통과를 통해 과학적 절차와 투명한 정보공개, 주민수용성을 담보한 처분장을 마련할 수 있도록 협력을 강화해 나가겠다”고 말했다.

Finland has been constructing the world's first high-level radioactive waste disposal site at a depth of 450 meters underground in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki City, based on legislation and parliamentary decisions, from 2016, and is scheduled to be fully operational from 2025.

In addition, TVO, a nuclear power plant operator, and POSIVA, an agency dedicated to radioactive waste management, are located in Eurayoki City, and operate three nuclear power plants and low- and medium-level radioactive waste disposal facilities.

  Finland's high-level radioactive waste transport and storage, site assessment, and related technologies are considered the best in the world.

Cha Seong-soo, chairman of the Korea Nuclear Environment Corporation, said, “We will strengthen cooperation so that we can prepare a repository that guarantees scientific procedures, transparent information disclosure, and public acceptance through the swift passage of the special law, using Finland’s experience as a tip for calculation.”
