국가유산청(청장 허민)과 영천시(시장 최기문), 재단법인 계림문화유산연구원(원장 최상태)은 25일, 영천 완산동 고분군Ⅲ 정비사업부지에서 진행 중인 발굴조사에서 대형 돌무지덧널무덤(적석목곽분)과 함께 금동관 등 중요 유물을 확인했다고 밝혔다.

이날 오후 1시 30분 현장에서 열린 설명회를 통해 발굴 성과가 일반에 공개됐다.

이번에 조사된 유적에서는 직경 16m 규모의 봉토 내에서 돌무지덧널무덤 3기, 독무덤(옹관묘) 2기 등이 확인됐다. 이 가운데 1호 무덤은 ‘凸’자 구조로, 중앙 으뜸덧널에서는 금동관과 금제 귀걸이, 유리구슬 목걸이, 은제 허리띠, 은장 고리자루칼 등이 출토됐다. 딸린덧널에서는 금동 마구류와 철기류, 토기류가 다수 확인됐다. 2·3호분에서도 철제 무기류와 토기 등이 나왔다.

이번 유적은 영천 지역에서 처음 확인된 대형 돌무지덧널무덤으로, 출토 유물과 무덤 구조 등을 바탕으로 기원후 5세기 말~6세기 초 신라 수장급 인물의 무덤으로 추정된다.

영천 완산동 고분군은 이 지역 최대 규모의 삼국시대 고분 유적으로, 의성 금성산 고분군, 경산 임당리 고분군에 견줄 만한 위상을 지닌다. 학계에서는 이 고분군을 의성 소문국, 경산 압독국과 함께 영천 골벌국의 중심 묘역으로 보고 있다.

최기문 영천시장은 “신라 중앙정부와 영천 지역의 관계를 보여주는 중요한 성과”라며 “국가유산청의 역사문화권 정비사업과 연계해 체계적인 조사와 보존에 나서겠다”고 밝혔다.

영천시는 향후 국가유산청과 협력해 추가 발굴과 정비·복원 작업을 이어가고, 시민과 전문가 대상 공개 행정도 지속한다는 방침이다.

The Yeongcheon Wansan-dong Ancient Tombs are the largest tomb site from the Three Kingdoms Period in the Yeongcheon region, comparable in status to the Geumseongsan Ancient Tombs in Uiseong and the Imdang-ri Ancient Tombs in Gyeongsan. Scholars believe they are the central tombs of the Golbeol Kingdom in Yeongcheon, along with the Somun Kingdom in Uiseong and the Apdok Kingdom in Gyeongsan.

The site of the Yeongcheon Wansan-dong Ancient Tombs III Redevelopment Project, the subject of the investigation, contained three stone-chambered wooden chamber tombs and two jar-shaped tombs within a mound approximately 16 meters in diameter.

The largest of these, Stone-chambered Wooden Chamber Tomb No. 1, features a convex shape, with a main chamber and an auxiliary chamber, the perimeter and top filled with broken stones and river stones. The main chamber yielded a gilt-bronze crown, gold thick-ring earrings, a glass bead necklace, a silver belt, and a silver-plated sword with a ring-pocket. Gilt-bronze horse gear, ironware, and numerous pottery items were also found in the auxiliary chambers. Numerous iron weapons and pottery were also found in Tomb No. 2 and Tomb No. 3.

This tomb, the first large stone-mound wooden chamber tomb excavated in the Yeongcheon area, has been confirmed to be a chieftain's tomb dating from the late 5th to early 6th century AD, based on the excavated artifacts and structure. The excavation team expects that this will provide crucial clues to the development of Silla and the political and social culture of the Yeongcheon region.

Yeongcheon Mayor Choi Ki-moon stated, "This is a significant achievement that demonstrates the relationship between the central government of Silla and the Yeongcheon region." He added, "We will pursue systematic investigation and preservation in conjunction with the National Heritage Administration's historical and cultural area preservation project."

Yeongcheon City plans to collaborate with the National Heritage Administration to conduct additional excavations, develop restoration and restoration plans, and continue to share the findings with citizens and experts through open administration.
