【브레이크뉴스 경북 경주】이성현 기자=한국수력원자력(주) 월성원자력본부(본부장 원흥대)는 지난 8일‘월성원자력본부 맥스터추가건설 1기 시민참관단 2회차 현장시찰’을 실시했다고 9일 밝혔다.

월성본부의 사용후핵연료 건식저장시설(이하 맥스터)은 정부의‘사용후핵연료 관리정책 재검토위원회’주관으로 주민공청회, 시민 의견수렴 등 공론화 절차를 거쳐 지난해 7월 81.4%의 높은 주민 찬성률로 7기에 대한 추가건설이 결정되었다.

이에 월성원자력본부는 맥스터 건설 과정을 투명하게 공개하고 국민과 소통하기 위해 총 2기수(기수 당 15명)로 시민참관단을 운영하고 있다.

이날 현장시찰에 참여한 1기 시민참관단은 지난해 11월 경북 경주시와 울산시 북구 주민을 대상으로 한 공개모집을 통해 선발되었으며, 올해5월까지 총 4회에 걸쳐 현장시찰, 견학 등 활동에 참여할 예정이다.

이날 시민참관단은 맥스터 건설현장을 비롯한 월성1호기 주제어실, 터빈홀, 사용후핵연료 습식저장조 등을 시찰했다. 현장을 둘러본 후 참관단 김옥희씨는 “원전에 대한 막연한 불안감을 갖고 있었는데 막상 맥스터 건설과정을 직접보고, 사용후핵연료 저장시설들을 둘러보니 안전하게 관리되고 있는 것 같다.”면서

“실제 사용후핵연료가 저장되어 있는 습식저장조에 직접 들어가 봤는데도 방사능 수치가 ‘깨끗하다(Clean)’고 나와서 안심했다.”고 말했다.

이에 현장시찰을 함께한 월성본부 박동운SF사업준비파트장은“앞으로도 더욱 안전하게 건설하고 관리하겠다.”고 답했다.

한편 월성원자력본부는 5월 1기 시민참관단 활동기간이 마무리 되면 8월부터 내년 2월까지 시민참관단 2기를 모집·운영할 예정이다.
