칠곡군은 7일 백 장군의 장녀 백남희(74) 여사가 칠곡군을 찾아 김재욱 군수에게 백선엽 장군이 남긴 마지막 유언을 전했다고 밝혔다.

칠곡군에 따르면 백 장군은 다부동전투가 벌어진 칠곡군을 제2의 고향이라고 할 만큼 남다른 애착을 가졌고 유가족은 한때 칠곡군 다부동을 백 장군 장지로 검토하기도 했다.

백 여사는“아버지는 임종을 앞두고 두 가지 유언을 남기셨다”라며“자신의 유해를 바로 묻지 말고, 서울 동작동 국립묘지에 들러 전우에게 인사를 하고 다시 경기도 평택 미군 부대와 부대 내 워커 장군 동상 앞에 가서 한미동맹 강화를 위한 메시지를 남기도록 해달라고 부탁했다”고 전했다.

그러면서“미군 부대에서는 아버지를 맞을 준비를 했지만, 일부의 반대로 마지막 소원을 이루어 드릴 수 없었다”며“저는 아버지의 유언을 하나도 실천하지 못한 불효녀이자 죄인”이라며 안타까운 마음을 드러냈다.

이에 김재욱 칠곡군수는 위로의 말을 건네며 다부동 흙을 담아 평화를 상징하는 올리브 나무를 심은 화분을 선물로 전달했다.

김 군수는“백 장군님은 부하들이 잠들어 있는 다부동에 묻히고 싶어 칠곡군에 땅을 매입하기도 했다”라며“다부동 흙에서 자란 올리브 나무처럼 장군님의 헌신이 한반도의 평화를 가져올 것”이라고 전했다.

그러면서“장군님의 나라 사랑과 충심은 늘 한결같으셨다”라며“진보와 보수를 떠나 대한민국을 위기에서 구한 공에 대해서는 정당한 평가를 받아야 한다”고 강조했다.

백 여사는 김 군수와의 만남에 이어 6.25전쟁 미망인과 저녁 식사를 하며 따뜻한 위로의 손길을 내밀었다.

또 8일에는 다부동전적기념관에서 열리는 한미동맹재단, 주한미군전우회, 육군협회가 주최하는‘故 백선엽장군 추모 2주기’행사에 참석한다.

이날 행사에는 이종섭 국방부 장관, 박민식 국가보훈처장, 김재욱 칠곡군수, 정희용 국회의원, 라카메라 한미연합사령관, 박정환 육군참모총장, 신희현 2작전사령관등이 함께한다.

한편 백선엽 장군은 1950년 6.25전쟁이 발발해 한 달 만에 낙동강전선만 남기고 적화되는 풍전등화의 위기 속에서 미군과 함께 다부동전투에서 전공을 세우며 32세에 대한민국 국군 최초의 대장에 올랐다.

탁월한 전술과 전략을 통해 6.25전쟁의 주요 전투를 승리로 이끌면서 한·미동맹의 기틀을 닦았다는 평가를 받고 있다.

2020년 7월10일 99세로 서거해 대전국립현충원 장군 제2묘역에 안장돼 있다.

Chilgok County Governor Kim Jae-wook offered words of consolation and delivered as a gift a flowerpot planted with an olive tree, a symbol of peace, with a lot of soil.

Governor Kim said, “General Baek wanted to be buried in Dongbu, where his men were sleeping, so he bought the land in Chilgok-gun.

He also emphasized, "The general's love and loyalty to his country has always been the same," he said.

After meeting with Governor Kim, Ms. Baek offered her warm and comforting hand over dinner with the Korean War widow.

She will also attend the '2nd Anniversary of the Late General Paik Seon-yup' hosted by the Korea-US Alliance Foundation, the U.S. Armed Forces Korea Association, and the Army Association held on the 8th at the She Da Undong Memorial Hall.
