경북교육동행포럼 공동상임위원장인 김상동·마숙자는 23일 발표한 입장문을 통해 “대구와 경북은 역사적·정서적으로 하나의 공동체”라며 “1981년 행정구역 분리 이후 누적된 비효율과 경계를 넘어, 통합이라는 시대적 과제를 더 이상 미룰 수 없다”고 밝혔다.

포럼은 현재 수도권 일극 체제 심화와 학령인구 감소로 지방 소멸 위기가 가속화되는 상황에서, 단순한 행정구역 통합만으로는 지역의 지속 가능성을 담보할 수 없다고 진단했다. 특히 행정·경제 논리에 치우친 기존 통합 논의에서 교육이 상대적으로 소외돼 왔다는 점을 문제로 지적했다.
