문재인 정부가 김해신공항을 공식 폐기하고 가덕도 신공항을 본격 추진할 것이란 방침이 전해지면서 부산 시장 보궐선거를 겨냥한 여권의 막판 뒤집기라는 비난이 쇄도하고 있다.

국토교통부는 30일 국무회의서 올해 5월 안에 타당성 조사에 착수해 내년 3월안에 마무리 하는 안을 제시했다. 그러면서 2016년 시작한 김해신공항 사업은 공식적으로 중단하고 가덕도에 신공항을 세우는 것을 본격 추진하겠다고 밝혔다. 본인들 스스로가 가덕도 신공항의 문제를 지적하고도 이를 뒤집는 결정을 내놓은 것이다.

실제, 국토부는 김해 신공항 기본 계획 수립에 필요한 모든 절차를 중단하고, 환경 영향평가 등 용역도 중도 포기한 것으로 알려졌다. 김해신공항 사업이 휴지조각이 되면서 그동안 투입됐던 40억원의 세금도 낭비됐다.

이날 변창흠 국토교통부 장관은 “가덕도 신공한 추진을 위한 사업 절차에 착수했다는 데 의미”를 부여하면서 “성공적인 공항 건설을 위해 가능한 모든 지원을 하겠다”고 밝혔다.

그러자 통합신공항을 추진해왔던 대구경북은 물론, 전국에서 이에 대한 정부 비난 목소리가 커지고 있다.

정치권 일각에서는 여권이 ‘부산시장을 노린 4월 보궐선거 막판 뒤집기용’ 이라고 평가했다. 또, 국토교통부에 대하여는 심사숙고해 결정했던 자신들의 판단도 하루아침에 없던 이야기로 만들어 버리는 ‘무책임한 기관’, ’아마추어 행정’이라는 비난이 속출했다.

지역 정치권은 보궐선거를 노린 정치적 의도에 초점을 맞췄다. 김상훈 의원(대구 서구)은 “부산 시장 선거가 어려우니 불씨라도 살려보고 싶은 의도로밖에 안보인다”며 “국무회의 내용을 보도자료 내놓는 것 자체가 이러한 의도가 있는 행위”라고 말했다. 특히 그는 타당성 조사를 내년 3월 전에 끝낸다는 내용에 대해서는 “이는 대선을 염두 해 둔 정치적 의도 행위”라고 재차 강조했다.

김희국 의원(경북 군위의성청송영덕)은 정부가 가덕도신공항 사업을 추진한다고 하더라도 제대로 건설을 완료할 것이냐에 대하서는 부정적인 입장을 나타냈다. 그는 매일신문과의 인터뷰에서 “가덕도 신공항 특별법 자체가 반헌법적 법률이다. 그리고 안되는 일은 어떻게 해도 안 되는 법”이라며 “타당성 용역 시 이를 과장하면 가만있지 않겠다”고 경고했다.

인터넷에서는 정부의 이 같은 결정에 ‘반드시 단죄를 해야 한다’는 주장에 많은 네티즌들이 댓글을 다는 가하면, “공항전문가 어느 누구 할 것 없이 가덕도 신공항은 타당성과 현실성 등이 없는 것으로 주장하고 있는데, 그런 주장에도 강행하다 그 기능을 발휘하지 못하거나 전문가들의 의견처럼 쓸모없는 공항으로 전락해 버린다면 그 책임은 문재인 정부가 고스란히 져야 한다”이 올라왔다. 또 다른 네티즌은 “문재인 정부는 박근혜 정권을 뛰어넘어 이제까지의 정부 가운데 가장 실패한 정부로 후손들에게 낙인찍힐 것”이라는 경고성 글도 눈에 띄었다.
