 24일 부산 지역구 국회의원 중 처음으로 대구경북 통합신공항 특별법에 찬성의사를 밝힌 조경태 의원은 “정부여당은 노골적인 지역차별을 중단하고, 대구경북 통합신공항 특별법을 즉각 추진해야 한다”고 목소리를 냈다.

조 의원의 지역구는 신공항 문제를 놓고 대구경북(TK) 지역과 극심한 갈등을 빚고 있는 부산 사하을이어서 그의 발언이 주목되는 가운데 그는 이날 직접 대구시의회를 방문해 "통합신공항 특별법 제정에 적극 나서겠다"는 공식적인 입장을 밝히기도 했다.

오전 11시쯤 이뤄진 깜짝 면담에는 조 의원과 장상수 대구시의회 의장, 김대현 부의장, 이시복 운영위원장과 안경은 통합신공항건설특별위원장 등이 참석해 머리를 맞댔다.

이 자리에서 조 의원은 "부산 국회의원이지만 소신에 따라 대구경북 통합신공항 특별법 추진에 앞장서서 적극적으로 힘을 보태겠다"고 밝힌 것으로 전해졌다.

그는 무엇보다 앞서 국회 국토교통위원회가 가덕도 특별법은 통과시켰으면서도 대구경북 통합신공항 특별법은 보류한 결정에 대해 "정부여당이 눈앞의 재보궐선거를 앞두고 벌인 철저한 정치적 계산으로 TK 역차별이 현실화된 것"으로 규정하면서 “국책사업 시행에 정치적 유불리를 따져선 안 된다”고 지적했다.

그러면서 “만약 정부여당이 TK 민심을 끝내 외면한다면 거대 국책사업조차 보궐선거 승리를 위한 '꼼수'로 활용한다는 것을 스스로 증명하는 것”이라는 비판을 이어갔다.

조경태 의원의 이와 같은 행동에 대구시의회 장상수 의장은 "지역 간 편 가르기 대신 상생에 노력하는 모습에 깊은 인상을 받아 감사의 뜻을 전했고, 함께한 시의원들도 모두 힘을 모으는 데 공감했다"면서 "지역과 중앙을 가리지 않고 정치권과 긴밀한 협업을 통해 특별법 제정을 추진할 것"이라고 말했다.
