조 의원은 1일 오전 대구 남구 대구아트파크에서 열린 아시아포럼21 초청토론회에서 "해체될 위기의 우리 당을 재건하고 구하겠다는 사명감"을 출마 배경으로 밝혔다.

조 의원은 현재 국민의힘이 위헌적 행위에 대한 반성과 책임 없이 극우로 기울고 있다며 강도 높은 인적 쇄신 필요성을 강조했다. 최근 논란이 된 45명 의원에 대한 '인적 청산' 주장에 대해서는 "제명하자는 것이 아니라 국민 판단에 맡기기 위해 인적쇄신위원회를 만들자는 것"이라고 해명했다.

특히 "헌법과 법을 위반한 윤석열 전 대통령을 옹호하는 세력은 정통 보수로 남을 수 없다"며 "내란 혐의로 구속 수사 중인 전 대통령을 옹호하는 건 헌법기관으로서 자격이 없다"고 단언했다. 그는 일부 판검사 출신 정치인들의 인식 수준도 강하게 비판하며 "우리 당의 가장 큰 문제는 과거에 대한 반성과 책임이 없다"고 지적했다.

산업통상자원부 대구·경북 이전 구상에 대해서는 "산업 근대화의 중심지였던 대구의 생명력을 되살리기 위한 매우 합리적이고 이치에 맞는 방안"이라고 설명했다. 그는 "대구는 32년간 1인당 GDP 전국 최하위"라며 "대구의 청년들이 기업도 없는 척박한 환경 속에서도 미래를 개척하고 있다"고 말했다.

당 대표가 될 경우 대통령과의 본격적인 협상을 통해 산자부 이전을 추진하겠다고 약속한 조 의원은 "지금이라도 지역 의원들이 함께 힘을 모은다면 언제든지 협력할 준비가 돼 있다"고 밝혔다.

국민의힘의 현 당명 변경 필요성도 언급했다. 그는 "당명 역시 윤석열 전 대통령과 연결되는 이미지에서 벗어날 필요가 있다"며 "국민 여론을 반영해 당명 변경도 검토할 수 있다"고 했다.

대구경북신공항 문제와 관련해서는 "부산 정치인으로서 대구신공항 추진을 공개 지지한 첫 인물"이라며 지방 의원들 간의 연대 필요성을 강조했다. 또한 "산자부 같은 핵심 부처가 옮겨와야 대구공항 사업도 중앙정부의 관심을 끌 수 있다"며 두 현안의 연계성을 설명했다.

조 의원은 대구경북 시도민에게 "좋은 정책은 초당적으로 수용해야 한다"며 "산자부 유치를 위해 지역 사회가 한마음으로 나서야 가능성이 생긴다"고 당부했다.

He added, "Daegu has had the lowest per capita GDP in the country for 32 years," and added, "Despite a harsh environment devoid of businesses, Daegu's young people are pioneering the future."

Representative Cho, who pledged to pursue the relocation of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy through full-scale negotiations with the president if elected party leader, stated, "I am ready to cooperate at any time if local lawmakers join forces."

He also mentioned the need to change the current name of the People Power Party. He said, "The party name also needs to shed its image associated with former President Yoon Seok-yeol," and added, "We could consider changing the name to reflect public opinion."

Regarding the Daegu-Gyeongbuk New Airport issue, he emphasized the need for solidarity among local lawmakers, saying, "I am the first Busan politician to publicly support the Daegu New Airport project."
