당 대표 후보 가운데 가장 먼저 마이크를 건네받은 황교안 전 대표는 ”문재인 정부를 겪어보니 좌파 정권이 다시 들어서면 안되겠더라. 우리 보수 정당이 30년 정권 지켜내면 자유민주국가 지킬 수 있다“고 강조했다.

그는 ”박근혜 정권 시절 개혁 정부를 위하여 노력 많이 했다. 그러나, 정권을 빼앗기고 나니 전부 오보가 되더라. 이후부터 이를 갈았다. 특히, 임종석이라는 사람은 종북 좌파 수괴 아닌가. 내가 구속시켰다“고 강조하고 ”그런데 나중에 문 정부를 탄생시키더라. 내가 문재인 정부의 공과 실을 체크해 봤다. 잘한 것은 하나도 없더라. 정말 좌파 정부 다시 들어서게 하면 안되겠다고 뼈저리게 느꼈다“고 고백했다. 그러면서 ”내가 (당)대표에 도전하는 것은 30년 정권을 수호하기 위함“이라고 덧붙였다.

그는 대구에서의 직장 생활 인연을 강조하고는 ”당의 꿈과 비전이 꺾이지 않도록 최선을 다하겠다. 그런데 대통령은 대구.경북에서 지켜드려야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 도의원 여러분들의 힘이 필요하다“고 역설했다. 

조경태 의원 "국회의원부터 싹 바뀌어야..." 당과 국회 변화 비전 제시

조경태 의원은 ”윤석열 정부의 성공을 위해서는 우리가 먼저, 뿌리부터 싹 변화해야 한다“고 강조했다. 조 의원은 ”5선 국회의원이 되어 돌아보니 우리 정치가 썩을 대로 썩어 있더라. 예전과 달리 최근에는 전과 있는 사람도 당 대표가 되더라“고 한탄했다. 그러면서도 ”우리 정치가 이토록 썩은 이유는 역설적으로 국민이 썩어 있기 때문“이라고 지적했다.

이어 그는 ”우리의 썩은 정치가 바뀌기 위해서는 국회의원인 나부터 기득권을 내려놔야 하겠더라. 국회의원 수도 대폭 줄여야한다“ 고 강조하고 ”당 대표가 되면 가장 먼저 비례대표제를 폐지하겠다. 또 국회의원 면책권 폐지도 추진하겠다. 전대 비용 등 정당들이 막무가내로 쓰고 있는 국고보조금도 폐지 시키겠다. 지난 20년간 1조 2500억원이 정당에 투입했는데 1천만 원만 써도 감사를 하는데, 정당은 단 한 번의 감사도 없었다“고 주장했다. 이어 ”무엇보다 공천권이 문제다. 국민과 주민이 아닌 권력자에 충성하는 이것부터 없애야 한다. 당 대표 되면 공천권도 내려놓겠다“고 강조했다. 

조 의원은 이날 연설 도중 몇몇 도의원들이 뒤쪽에서 수군거리는 소리가 들리자 ”조용히 하시라. 남의 이야기를 들을 줄도 알아야 한다“며 핀잔을 주기도 했다. 다만 이날 참석한 후보들 가운데 당과 국회의 변화와 그 대안을 제시한 사람은 조경태 의원이 유일했다.

이날 행사장에 가장 늦게 도착한 김기현 의원의 아내인 이신애 여사는 고등학교 시절 김 의원을 만나 사랑을 하고 1남 3녀의 자녀를 낳아 기르는 등의 가족사로 이야기를 꺼냈다. 

그는 ”남편이 선출직을 하기 시작할 때는 힘들더라. 특히 원내대표 시절에는 더 힘들었다“고 고백하고는 ”그렇게 남편의 선수가 늘어갈수록 남편을 존경하게 되더라. 남편이 가끔 술 한잔하고 들어오실 때면 내게로 와 ‘신애야 고맙데이’라고 인사해준다. 그러면 그때마다 나는 그 소리가 더 듣고 싶어 서너 잔까지는 하지 말고 한 잔씩만 하고 들어오라고 한다. 지금 여기 계신 의원님들은 아내 되시는 분들에게 빚을 지고 사신다“며 짠한 여인의 마음을 전했다.
