논란이 불거지자 Y 의원은 본지와 통화에서 “노조 활동 시절부터 난청이 있어 목소리가 크다”며 “어찌됐든 논란이 된 만큼 당사자에게 정중히 사과했고, 당사자도 받아들였다”고 해명했다. 그러면서 “그날 일은 업무였다. 도의원 자격으로 도청 업무를 질타한 것”이라고 주장했다.

하지만 ‘업무 질타’라는 그의 해명에 대한 의문도 제기된다. 사과 방식 또한 논란을 키웠다. 해당 공무원을 직접 찾아간 것이 아니라 오히려 도의회로 호출해 사과 자리를 마련한 것으로 확인됐다.
