권 위원장은 5일 보도자료를 통해 “지난 2000년대 초 입당 이후 당협 운영위원장협의회 회장과 시의원을 역임하며 헌신해왔으나, 참담한 마음으로 탈당을 결정했다”며 “정당 중심의 정치 구조가 가진 한계를 절실히 느꼈기에 이번 선거에서는 오로지 시민들의 선택을 구하고자 한다”고 밝혔다.

“중앙정치 눈치 보기 등 정당 정치 폐해 심각”

권 위원장은 탈당의 변을 통해 현행 정당 정치의 고질적인 병폐를 강하게 비판했다. 특히 선거구 획정 지연과 공천권 중심의 지역 정치 풍토를 정면으로 겨냥했다.

그는 “선거가 코앞인데도 선거구 획정을 미루는 중앙 정치로 인해 후보자와 유권자 모두 혼란을 겪고 있다”며 “이런 상황에서 선출직들이 민생은 뒷전에 둔 채 공천권자의 눈치만 살피는 행태는 민주주의 원칙을 흔드는 일”이라고 지적했다. 

“경산 정치사 새로운 획 긋겠다” 광역의원 도전

권 위원장은 지난 4년간 시의회 운영위원장 등 중책을 맡으며 쌓아온 의정 경험과 위기 대처 능력을 바탕으로 광역의회(도의원)에 도전한다는 계획이다.

출마지는 경산시 제3선거구(서부2·중방·북부·중앙)로 알려졌다. 권 위원장은 “보수의 텃밭이라 불리는 경산에서 정당이 아닌 깨끗하고 참신한 인물을 뽑는 새로운 도전에 나서겠다”며 “시민들의 냉정하고 합리적인 판단으로 경산 정치사에 큰 획을 그어달라”고 호소했다.

그는 지난 3일 국민의힘 경북도당에 기초의원 공천 신청을 철회한 데 이어, 4일에는 국민의힘에 탈당계를 제출하며 무소속 출마를 위한 행정적 절차를 마쳤다.

경산중학교 총 동창회장과 경산시의회 후반기 운영위원장을 맡고 있는 그는 앞전에는 경산시당협 운영위원회 회장, 전) 국회정무위원회 정책자문위원과 전) 경산라이온스클럽 회장 및 경산시 탁구협회 회장 등을 역임했다.

Chairman Kwon plans to run for the Metropolitan Council (Provincial Assembly member), leveraging the legislative experience and crisis management skills he has accumulated over the past four years while holding key positions, such as Chairman of the City Council Steering Committee.

His constituency is reportedly Gyeongsan City’s 3rd electoral district (Seobu 2, Jungbang, Bukbu, and Jungang). Chairman Kwon appealed, “I will embark on a new challenge to elect a clean and fresh figure, rather than a political party, in Gyeongsan, which is known as a conservative stronghold,” and asked citizens to “mark a significant chapter in Gyeongsan’s political history through their cool-headed and rational judgment.” He completed the administrative procedures for running as an independent candidate by withdrawing his application for nomination as a local council member to the People Power Party's North Gyeongsang Provincial Committee on the 3rd, and submitting his resignation from the party on the 4th.

Currently serving as the President of the Gyeongsan Middle School Alumni Association and the Chairman of the Steering Committee for the second half of the Gyeongsan City Council term, he previously served as the Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Gyeongsan City Party Chapter, a former policy advisor to the National Assembly Political Affairs Committee, and the former President of the Gyeongsan Lions Club and the Gyeongsan City Table Tennis Association.
