이번 경선의 가장 큰 논란 중 하나는 김재원 예비후보의 ‘최고위원직 유지’다. 경쟁자인 이철우 지사 측은 “당 지도부라는 심판이 선수로 직접 뛰는 것은 명백한 반칙”이라며 사퇴를 압박하고 있다.

지역 정치권 일각에서는 “이같은 구조적 문제를 단순히 법령상으로 문제가 없다는 식으로 치부하고 넘어가는 것은 기존 의회 기능을 무시하자는 것 밖에 되지 않고 종국에는 의회 기능이 제대로 발현되지 않는 구조를 만들어내고, 이미 대구경북 의회는 이러한 심정지 상태에 놓여 있다“고 비판했다. 

정치 전문가 A 씨는 “심판이 선수로 뛰는 것이 문제라면, 현직 프리미엄을 이용해 의회 조직을 선거 대변인실로 사용하는 행태 역시 공정한 운동장을 뒤흔드는 심각한 자해 행위”라고 꼬집었다. 

지역 민심 “누가 돼도 상처뿐인 영광… 본선 경쟁력 우려”

국회의원과 지방의원들이 연이어 지지선언에 나서고 있는 모습이 자발적 선택이라고 보기보다는 현직 지사의 권력에 의한 ‘강제적 줄 세우기’라는 의혹도 있다. 결국 김재원 예비후보가 당 규정에 없다하여 최고위원직을 유지하고 선거에 나서는 자체와 이철우 예비후보의 ‘보여주기식 세몰이’는 2026년 국민의힘 경북도지사 후보 선출 경선 질을 떨어뜨리고 있다는 분석이다.

경북 유권자들의 피로감은 이미 임계점을 넘고 있다. 산불에 지쳤던 도민들이 조금이나마 숨통을 트일만하니 선거가 다시 목을 조이고 있다는 푸념들도 있다.  

의성 지역 정치권의 한 관계자는 “초대형 산불이 할퀴고 쓸어간 지 이제 1년”이라며 “1년 사이 달라진 것이라곤 찾아보기 힘들다. 아직도 주민들은 힘들게 억지로 살고 있다”고 말했다. 그러면서 “이럴 때 정치권이 힘과 용기를 주어야 할텐데, 국민의힘 경북도지사 후보들이 하는 행동을 보면 개탄스럽기만 하다. 그렇잖아도 힘든 주민들을 더 힘들게 하고 있다”며 일일이 후보 한 사람 한사람에 대한 비판을 쏟아냈다.  

정책보다는 상대 후보의 과거 행적과 사법 리스크를 발굴하는 데 혈안이 된 캠프들의 모습에 “차라리 경선을 하지 말라”는 격앙된 목소리까지 나온다.

상대가 제기한 의혹에 대해 해명은커녕 “네거티브 하지 마라”는 말로 일관하는 태도나, 기득권을 지키기 위해 줄 세우기에 급급한 모습은 누가 최종 후보가 되더라도 본선에서의 정당성을 약화할 수밖에 없다는 정치권의 따끔한 충고도 있다. 

지역 정치권 관계자는 “어느 선거보다 민주당에 대한 관심이 높아질 수밖에 없는 상황”이라며 “보수의 심장이라는 이곳에서 국민의힘이 이렇게 허우적거리고 무질서한 경선을 하다가는 결국 주민들로부터 얻을 것은 외면 뿐일 것이다. 이 지역은 그렇지 않을 것이라 믿고 싶겠지만, 민심은 언제든 혼내고 돌아설 수 있다”고 말했다.
