그는 "공천 배제 기준 다섯 가지 중 자신이 해당되는 부분이 있는지 밝혀달라고 요청했으나, 당으로부터 답변을 듣지 못했다"고 주장했다. 

이어 이번 사안이 개인의 문제가 아니라 대구시민의 선택권을 제한한 것이라고 강조했다.

당내 반응에 대해서도 비판을 이어갔다. 이 전 위원장은 "명백한 원칙 위반임에도 지역 정치권이 침묵했고, 오히려 선당후사를 이유로 받아들이라고 요청했다"고 밝혔다. 그러면서 "이런 구조로는 시정이 제대로 운영될 수 없다"고 지적했다.

이 전 위원장은 해결책으로 경선 절차의 원상 복구를 제시했다. 그는 "아직 늦지 않았다며, 모든 후보가 동의한다면 여론조사 없이도 공정한 경선 복원이 가능하다"고 주장했다. 다만 탈당이나 무소속 출마 가능성에 대해서는 "상황이 발생하면 입장을 밝히겠다"며 여지를 남겼다.
