【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=배광식 대구 북구청장이 23일 대구시장 선거에 출마하지 않겠다고 공식 선언했다. 

배 청장은 이날 입장문을 내고 “지방자치 30년의 성과와 한계를 돌아본다”며 “대구 시민 대표가 대한민국 대표로 나아가는 날을 기대한다”고 밝혔다.

배 청장은 “대한민국 지방자치가 30년을 맞았지만, 수도권 중심의 성장 전략이 지역 불균형이라는 대가를 남겼다”며 “서울과 경기 대표가 대통령이 된 것처럼, 대구 대표 역시 대한민국 대표가 될 수 있다는 시민들의 희망을 확인했다”고 말했다.

불출마 배경에 대해서는 “그 희망을 현실로 만들 적임자라고 자신 있게 말하진 못하겠다”며, 오는 지방선거에서 대구시장에 도전하지 않기로 했다고 설명했다. 

이어 “대구 시민 대표가 대한민국 대표로 나아가는 지방자치의 새 역사를 더욱 간절하게 바라는 마음에, 저의 소임이 다가오는 6월에는 없다는 점을 인정하게 됐다”고 전했다.

최근 속도를 내고 있는 대구·경북 행정통합 논의도 언급했다. 배 청장은 “지방균형발전에 대한 시민 열기가 어느 때보다 뜨겁다”며 “여러 우려가 있음에도, 대구경북통합 논쟁이 활발히 이뤄지는 점은 의미가 크다”고 평가했다.

차기 대구시장에게는 “수도권 못지않은 경쟁력을 갖춰야 하며, 행정구역에 얽매이지 않고 더 큰 미래를 시민과 함께 그려야 한다”고 강조했다. 이어 “저는 새롭게 출항하는 '대구호'의 선장이 아니라 시민들과 같은 평범한 선원으로 남겠다”고 덧붙였다.
