주 부의장은 15일 자신의 SNS를 통해 “7년 넘게 밀어온 대구경북 행정통합이 결국 물거품이 됐다”며 “수도권 일극 체제에 맞서 청년 유출을 막고 지역 소멸을 피하려던 시도민의 마지막 몸부림이 정치적 계산에 의해 짓밟혔다”고 성토하는 등 이번 무산 과정을 ‘열차’에 비유하며 강하게 비판했다. 

그는 지난 2월 국회 법제사법위원회에서 전남·광주 특별법은 통과된 반면, TK 특별법만 보류된 점을 지적했다. 그는 “같은 날 함께 출발한 열차인데, 호남에는 녹색불을 주고 TK에는 빨간불을 켰다”며 “전남·광주는 20조 원의 재정 지원과 공공기관 이전 우선권 등 방대한 특례를 갖게 됐는데, TK는 ‘좀 더 보자’며 문을 닫았다. 이것이 지역 차별이 아니면 무엇이냐”고 반문했다.

또, 지난달 9일 이재명 대통령에게 보낸 7쪽 분량의 손 편지도 전격 공개했다. 서한에는 “모두가 대한민국의 국민이고 대한민국 국민 모두의 대통령 아니시냐”며 법적 요건을 모두 갖춘 TK 통합을 반드시 결단해달라는 호소가 담겨져 있다.

특히 주 부의장은 6·3 지방선거 대구시장 후보로 나선 더불어민주당 김부겸 전 국무총리를 정조준했다. 김 후보가 통합 무산 이후 ‘다시 추진해 10조 원이라도 지원받아야 한다’고 언급한 것에 대해 주 부의장은 “법사위에서 막힐 때는 어디 계셨느냐”고 일갈했다.

그는 “문 앞에서 사람을 세워놓고 나중에 나타나 내가 문을 열겠다고 하면 시도민이 믿겠느냐”며, 민주당이 자당 후보의 선거 환경을 위해 통합 단체장 출범을 막고 현행 구도를 유지하려 한 것이 아니냐는 의혹을 제기했다. 실제로 최근 여론조사에서 김 후보가 앞서가는 상황을 염두에 둔 ‘정치적 보이콧’이라는 해석이다.

비판의 화살은 여권 내부로도 향했다. 주 부의장은 통합 무산을 정치적으로 활용하려는 같은 당 후보들을 향해서도 “열차가 떠나기 전까지 잠잠하다가 이제 와서 통합을 외치는 목소리가 진짜 지역을 위한 것이냐, 아니면 자기 선거를 위한 것이냐”며 쓴소리를 쏟아냈다.

그는 이번에도 500만 시도민에게 사과의 뜻을 전하며 “정치가 한 번 걷어찼다고 해서 시도민의 뜻이 사라지는 것은 아니다. 지역 살리기를 위한 싸움을 끝까지 멈추지 않겠다”고 밝혔다.
