국민의힘에서는 무려 8명의 예비 후보가 공천을 두고 경쟁 중이다. 더불어민주당, 조국혁신당, 정의당도 각각 후보를 내세우면서 동구는 보기 드문 다자 구도가 형성됐다.

국민의힘에서는 권기일 대구시당 부위원장, 배기철 전 동구청장, 서호영 전 대구시의원, 우성진 세부상사 대표, 이재혁 대구시당 부위원장, 정해용 전 대구시 경제부시장, 차수환 대구시당 부위원장 등 7명에 비공개 신청자 1명을 포함해 총 8명이 공천장을 노린다. 후보 면면도 다양하다. 전직 구청장부터 광역의원, 경제 관료, 당직자, 기업인까지 여러 이력이 골고루 포진됐다.

야권에서는 더불어민주당 신효철 전 동구의원, 조국혁신당 정한숙 지역위원장, 정의당 양희 동구위원장이 출사표를 던졌다. 각 당 모두 후보 단일화 없이 완주 의지를 밝히면서 동구에서 흔치 않은 다당 경쟁 구도가 펼쳐졌다.

하지만 동구 내 보수 표심이 워낙 두터워 야권 후보들에게는 ‘당선’보다 ‘득표율’과 ‘존재감’ 확보가 우선 과제가 될 것이라는 관측도 나온다.

이번 선거에서 동구가 주목받는 또 다른 이유로는 ‘권력 공백’이라는 특수성이 거론된다. 윤석준 전 동구청장이 건강 문제와 공직선거법 위반으로 직을 상실하면서 정상적인 행정 운영이 어려워졌고, 지역이  ‘무주공산’ 상태에 놓였기 때문이다. 이로 인해 행정 공백이 이어지면서 주요 현안 추진 동력도 눈에 띄게 약화됐다는 지적이 나온다.

지역 정치권에서는 “현역이 없는 선거는 조직력과 인지도, 세력 경쟁이 모두 초기화돼 누구에게나 기회가 열린다”며 “이런 상황이 유력 주자뿐 아니라 다양한 후보들의 대거 출마로 이어졌다”고 분석했다.

The candidates are diverse in background, ranging from former district mayors and metropolitan council members to economic bureaucrats, party officials, and businesspeople.

There is a strong sentiment within local political circles that "in Dong-gu, the primary election is the final round, to the extent that the formula 'the nomination result is the general election result' holds true." In the opposition camp, Shin Hyo-cheol, a former Dong-gu council member from the Democratic Party of Korea; Jeong Han-sook, the regional committee chair of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party; and Yang Hee, the Dong-gu committee chair of the Justice Party, have declared their candidacy. With each party expressing their determination to see the race through without candidate unification, a rare multi-party competition has unfolded in Dong-gu.

However, given the strong conservative base in Dong-gu, some observers predict that securing a high "vote share" and establishing a "presence" will be a higher priority for opposition candidates than simply winning the election.

Another reason Dong-gu is drawing attention in this election is the unique situation of a "power vacuum." This is because former Dong-gu Mayor Yoon Seok-jun lost his post due to health issues and violations of the Public Official Election Act, making normal administrative operations difficult and leaving the region in a state of "no-management." Critics point out that this prolonged administrative vacuum has significantly weakened the momentum for pushing forward key pending issues. Local political circles analyzed, “In an election without an incumbent, organizational strength, name recognition, and power struggles are all reset, opening up opportunities for anyone,” adding that “this situation led to a large number of diverse candidates running, not just leading contenders.”
