국민의힘 당 대표 주자인 김 웅 의원이 14일 “국민들은 국민의힘이 진정으로 변하는 것을 보고 싶어 하고 간절히 바라고 있다”고 말했다.

김 의원은 이날 대구경북인터넷기자협회와 간담회를 갖고 이같이 밝혔다. 그는 “그동안 우리 당은 제대로 돌보지 못했던 취약계층을 위해 당헌과 정강정책 등에 있어 상당히 많은 부분을 손보고 변화가 있었다”면서 “그럼에도 국민들께서는 그것을 잘 알지 못하고 계신다. 우리가 변하고 있다는 것을 국민들께 제대로 알리는 방법은 우리 당의 얼굴을 바꾸는 것이라고 생각한다. 그래야 내년 대선을 승리할 수 있고, 내가 우리 당 대표가 되는 것 자체가 우리 당이 변했다는 것을 그대로 보여드리는 것”이라고 주장했다.

그는 당 대표가 되면 노동자 등 그동안 국민의힘이 소홀했던 취약층에 대한 공천 트랙을 만들겠다고 했다. 김 의원은 또 “당의 시스템 구조 변경이 절대적으로 필요하다. 지금은 조직을 불리고 늘리는 데만 목적을 두고 있다”면서 . 인터넷으로 당원 가입조차 되지 않는 당을 엔지니어링 정당으로 탈바꿈시켜 데이터를 분석하고 이를 피드백 하면서 사람들의 삶을 바꾸는 데 적용시키겠다”고 강조했다. 지금의 공천관리위원회는 상설기구로 전환시키고, 평소부터 인재와 후보를 육성하는 기능을 수행하도록 전환시키겠다고 말했다. 그래야 계파도, 싸움도 없게 된다고 했다.

최소 4선 5선 의원들과 맞붙어야 하는 만큼 조직력에서 다소 밀릴 수밖에 없을 것이란 분석과 관련해서는 ‘젊은 후보들간의 단일화 가능성’을 언급했다. 김 의원은 “당을 위해서라면 그럴(단일화) 수도 있을 것이다. 무엇보다 셋(이준석, 김은혜, 본인) 다 자기 희생할 줄 안다. 이준석 최고는 내가 본 정치인 중에 가장 의리 있는 정치인이고, 김은혜 의원은 화끈하다. 당이 변해야 한다고 생각하면 하나로 뭉쳐질 수밖에 없다.”고 말했다.

영남배제론과 관련해서는 ‘나는 영남 배제론을 말한 바도 없다. 또, 중진들께서 그렇게 섭섭하시면 초선 젊은 주자들 좀 내놓으시라 주문 드리고 싶다. 그러면 우리가 그 사람을 밀겠다.  영남에선 초선 젊은 친구에게는 기회조차 안주지 않으냐“고 주장했다. 

그는 또 홍준표 의원 관련한 질문에는 “복당이 안된다고 말 한적 없다. 이어 “그분이 가지고 있는 지분, 지지자 있는 것 모르는 게 아니다. 복당하시면 소폭이라도 당의 지지율이 올라가지 않겠느냐? 그러나 그거 별로 중요하지 않다. 그보다는 (홍의원의 복당으로) 윤석열이 함께 하기는 어려워질 가능성이 높아지게 될 것”이라고 다소 부정적으로 내다봤다. 

내년 대선에서의 상대당인 민주당 후보 중 걱정되는 상대가 있느냐는 질문에는 “완전한 새 인물이 나오면 어려울 것 같다”고 했다. 또 김종인 전 비대위원장과의 만남과 관련해서는 “(민주당은) 대선후보 선출과정에서 분열될 것이라고 하셨다. 그것을 염두에 두고 준비를 하라고 말씀하셨다” 며 “다른 의도를 가지고 만난 것이 아니라 조언을 듣기 위해 만나뵈었다”고 말했다.

김 의원은 당 대표가 되고 대선주자가 확정되면 정치 참여율 상승을 위한 기금 모금 및 육성에 나서겠다고 밝혔다. 구체적으로는 대선주자에 권한을 이양하고 전국을 다니며 100억 규모의 한국형 해리티지 재단을 설립하는 것이라고 덧붙였다.

국민의힘 전대 영(young)보이냐, 올드(old)보이냐 구도

한편, 국민의힘 전당대회가 이른바 초선 및 원외의 젊은 기수들과 당 중진들간의 경쟁으로 흐르는 분위기다. 중진 입장에서는 별로 내키지 않는 상황이지만, 어느덧 국민의힘 당권 구도는 영(young)보이와 올드(old)보이로 확연한 구분이 이뤄졌다.

중진 대표 주자 중 한 사람인 주호영 전 원내대표는 연일 이준석 전 최고위원과 설전을 벌이며 경쟁체제를 굳혀가고 있다. 김 웅 의원은 국민의힘 의원은 아니지만 복당이 예상되고 있는 홍준표 무소속 의원과 본의 아닌 설전이 오가면서 자연스레 초선 국회의원 기수로서의 중심으로 자리하고 있다.
