영천시의회는 이미 인구감소 문제의 심각성을 인식하고, 지난해 ‘인구감소 대책 특별위원회’와 ‘의원 연구단체’를 구성해 지역 맞춤형 정책 마련에 나서고 있다. 특별위원회는 집행부와의 간담회 및 보고회를 통해 현행 인구 정책의 점검과 개선 방안 논의를 진행하고 있으며, 인구 증가 우수사례를 벤치마킹해 영천시에 적합한 정책 발굴에도 힘쓰고 있다.
또한 의원 연구단체는 시민 대상 설문조사 등을 통해 지역 여건을 분석하고, 정주 인구 증가뿐만 아니라 생활 인구 확대를 위한 지속 가능한 방안 마련에도 노력을 기울이고 있다.
김 의장은 “인구감소와 고령화는 단순히 지역의 문제가 아닌, 우리 모두가 함께 고민하고 풀어나가야 할 국가적 과제”라며 “영천시의회는 앞으로도 실효성 있는 맞춤형 인구 정책을 지속적으로 발굴하고 지원하겠다”고 강조했다.
한편, 이번 캠페인에는 최기문 영천시장의 지목으로 참여하게 되었으며, 김 의장은 다음 주자로 신봉자 영천교육지원청 교육장을 지목했다.
