대학측에 따르면 이번 활동은 교육협동조합 세움과 협업하여 진행된 것으로, 학생들은 ‘반려동물 재난위기관리사’ 교육과정을 이수한 전문 인력으로서 참여했다. 이들은 구조된 동물의 건강 관리와 정서적 안정 지원 등 다양한 역할을 수행하며 현장에서 큰 도움을 주었다.

정현아 반려동물보건학과 학과장은 “학생들이 실제 재난 현장에서 생명을 돌보는 뜻깊은 경험을 했다”며, “앞으로도 사회적 실천과 연계된 교육을 강화해, 반려동물과 사람이 함께 안전하게 살아갈 수 있는 사회를 만드는 데 대구한의대학교가 적극 기여하겠다”고 밝혔다.

교육협동조합 세움의 박호일 이사장은 “재난은 모든 생명에게 일어나는 일이며, 반려동물은 단순한 존재가 아닌 가족”이라며, “이번 활동을 통해 반려동물과 보호자가 함께 안전하게 대피할 수 있는 사회를 만들기 위해 더욱 노력하겠다”고 강조했다.

이번 보호소 운영은 반려동물과 보호자가 함께 대피할 수 있는 제도적 기반이 부족한 현실에서, 인식 개선과 제도 정비를 위한 중요한 출발점이 될 것으로 보인다. 특히 대구한의대학교 반려동물보건학과의 적극적인 참여는 미래 사회의 반려동물 복지 향상에 있어 큰 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다.

한편, 2025년 3월 22일 발생한 경상북도 의성군 대형 산불로 인해 많은 이재민이 발생했으며, 미처 대피하지 못한 반려동물들은 유실되거나 방치되는 안타까운 상황에 놓이게 됐다. 이에 따라 ‘재난동물구조협의체’의 주도로 LG U+, 더프라미스, 대구시자원봉사지원센터가 함께 기획·운영하는 ‘반려동물 쉼터(임시보호소)’가 설치되어, 피해 반려동물에 대한 구조와 돌봄이 본격적으로 이뤄지고 있다.
