【브레이크뉴스 대구】이성현 기자=엑스코가 지난해 8월부터 대구시 국제회의 전담기구로 본격 활동을 시작하면서, 지역 마이스(MICE) 산업이 새로운 전기를 맞고 있다.

국제학술대회와 산업 컨퍼런스를 잇달아 유치하며 글로벌 컨벤션 도시로서 대구의 위상 강화에 속도를 내고 있기 때문이다.

세계적 학술·산업 행사 대구 유치 성과도 이어지고 있다. 엑스코는 지난 7월 세계 40개국 물산업 전문가 1,200여명이 참가하는 ‘2028 세계여과총회(WFC)’ 유치에 성공했다. 

물 필터기술 분야의 최고 권위 학술대회로, 대구 개최 확정은 지역 물산업 경쟁력과 국제 위상 제고에 큰 의미를 지닌다. 

이어 ‘2026 세계신경재활학회’(60개국 2천여명), ‘2028 아시아·태평양약리학회’(26개국 1천여명) 등 의학 분야 대규모 국제행사도 연이어 개최된다. 또한 주로 미국과 유럽에서 개최되던 ‘국제 가상현실 컨퍼런스(IEEE VR)’가 2026년 한국에서는 최초로 대구 엑스코에서 열린다.

올해에도 대규모 국제행사가 대구에서 줄줄이 개최된다. 지난 8월 열린 ‘FIRA 로보월드컵’에는 17개국 900여 명이 참가해 4개 리그, 46개 종목의 열띤 경쟁을 벌였다. 9월에는 ‘세계공학교육포럼(WEEF 2025)’이 처음으로 대구에서 열리며, 세계 공학 석학 1천여명이 참가한다. 10월에는 20개국 2천여 명이 참여하는 ‘제13차 아시아태평양소동물수의사대회(FASAVA Congress)’가 개최될 예정이다.

엑스코는 지역 마이스 산업 경쟁력 강화를 위해 산업 연계 확대와 기반 확충에도 나서고 있다. 대구시는 2020년부터 국제회의 복합지구를 조성해 왔으며, 올해는 총 4억 원의 사업비를 투입해 스마트 회의환경 구축, 마이스 전문 인력 양성, 산업생태계 육성 사업을 추진 중이다.

참가자 편의를 위한 서비스도 강화된다. 엑스코는 숙박·관광 원스탑 결제 시스템 ‘하우징뷰로시스템’, 국제회의 신청 ‘BE시스템’을 도입했으며, AI 통역 서비스와 행사장·숙박시설 간 무료 셔틀버스도 제공한다.

9월에는 국내 최대 항노화 의료기술 행사인 ‘아·태 안티에이징 컨퍼런스’가 개최되고, 마이스 산업 협력체 ‘마이스 얼라이언스’ 출범과 대구마이스포럼 개최도 예정돼 있다.

Since EXCO began its full-fledged operations as the city's dedicated international conference organization in August of last year, the local MICE industry has experienced a new turning point. Hosting a series of international academic and industrial conferences, Daegu is accelerating its position as a global convention city.

Daegu is also continuing its success in attracting world-class academic and industrial events. In July, EXCO successfully secured the bid to host the 2028 World Filtration Congress (WFC), which attracted approximately 1,200 water industry experts from 40 countries.

As the most prestigious academic conference in the field of water filtration technology, its confirmation in Daegu holds significant significance in enhancing the competitiveness of the local water industry and its international standing.

Following this, large-scale international medical events are also slated for a series, including the 2026 World Congress of Neurorehabilitation (2,000 participants from 60 countries) and the 2028 Asia-Pacific Congress of Pharmacology (1,000 participants from 26 countries). Additionally, the International Conference on Virtual Reality (IEEE VR), previously held primarily in the US and Europe, will be held in Korea for the first time at Daegu EXCO in 2026.

A series of large-scale international events are also being held in Daegu this year. The FIRA RoboWorld Cup, held last August, saw over 900 participants from 17 countries compete fiercely across four leagues and 46 events. In September, the World Engineering Education Forum (WEEF 2025) will be held in Daegu for the first time, attracting over 1,000 leading engineering scholars from around the world. In October, the 13th Asia Pacific Small Animal Veterinary Association (FASAVA) Congress is scheduled to be held, with over 2,000 participants from 20 countries.

EXCO is also working to expand industrial connections and strengthen its infrastructure to strengthen the competitiveness of the regional MICE industry. Daegu City has been developing an international conference complex since 2020. This year, it is investing a total of 400 million won to build a smart conference environment, train MICE professionals, and foster an industrial ecosystem.

Services for attendee convenience will also be enhanced. EXCO has introduced the "Housing Bureau System," a one-stop payment system for accommodations and tourism, and the "BE System," an international conference registration system. It also offers AI interpretation services and a free shuttle bus between the event venue and accommodations.

In September, the "Asia-Pacific Anti-Aging Conference," Korea's largest anti-aging medical technology event, will be held. The launch of the "MICE Alliance," a MICE industry cooperation body, and the Daegu MICE Forum are also scheduled.
