이에 국민의힘 이달희 의원이 의사진행 발언을 통해 “조례나 행정 절차를 따지는 문제제기는 존중한다. 그러나 대구를 특정 정치 성향으로 매도하며 ‘꼴통보수’라는 식으로 폄하하는 것은 여당 의원으로서 결코 해서는 안 될 일”이라고 강하게 반발했다.

이 의원은 “시장도 없는 자리에서 공직자들에게 정치적 질문을 쏟아내고, 지역의 역사와 자긍심을 평가절하하는 것은 국정감사의 본래 목적을 훼손하는 행위”라며 “대구 시민에 대한 모욕이며, 여당답지 못한 행태”라고 일침을 가했다.

이에 대해 더불어민주당 윤건영 의원은 “국정감사는 국민이 궁금해하는 사안을 기관에 묻는 자리”라며 “정치적 중립을 이유로 질의 자체를 문제 삼는 것은 납득하기 어렵다”고 맞섰다. 하지만 윤 의원의 반론에도 불구하고 여당 의원들의 일부 발언이 지역 감정을 자극했다는 비판은 이어졌다.

국민의힘 의원들은 “대구가 변화해야 한다는 문제의식은 이해하지만, 특정 지역을 ‘보수의 상징’으로 폄하하는 언사는 국민 통합에도 도움이 되지 않는다”며 “국감이 아닌 정치공세의 장으로 변질되고 있다”고 지적했다.

여야 공방은 이후 홍준표 전 시장의 행정 논란으로 방향을 옮기며 가까스로 진정됐지만, 이번 사태는 국정감사 자리에서조차 정치적 언어가 지역 비하로 번지는 현실을 여실히 보여줬다는 평가가 나온다.

대구 지역 한 관계자는 “행정 감시를 명분으로 한 정치 공세가 되풀이되고 있다”며 “감사위원들이 국민의 대표로서 품격 있는 언어를 사용해야 한다”고 꼬집었다.

이어 이날 "여당의원들의 '수구 꼴통' 운운한 발언은 지난달 국민의힘 김정재 의원의 경남·경북·울산에 초대형 산불에 따른 특별법에 대한 지원을 핵심으로 하는 법안을 통과시키는 데 불참, 기권한 의원들에 대해 아쉬움을 표현 하면서 나온 “호남은 산불 안나나” 발언과 비교도 안될만큼 지역 비하성 발언"이라며 불쾌감을 감추지 않았다.

Despite Representative Yoon's counterargument, criticism persisted that some of the ruling party's comments had inflamed regional sentiment.

People Power Party lawmakers stated, "While we understand the need for Daegu to change, degrading a specific region as a 'symbol of conservatism' does not contribute to national unity. This audit is being transformed into a forum for political attacks."

The bickering between the ruling and opposition parties eventually eased, shifting focus to the administrative controversy surrounding former Mayor Hong Joon-pyo. However, some say the incident vividly illustrates the reality of political language spilling over into regional disparagement, even during the state audit.

A Daegu official criticized the situation, saying, "Political attacks under the guise of administrative oversight are recurring. As representatives of the people, the audit committee members should use dignified language."
