【브레이크뉴스 경북】이성현 기자=영천시선거관리위원회는 시장 선거 예비후보자에 대한 허위사실을 유포하고 불법 여론조사를 실시한 혐의로 영천시민 A씨(30대)를 13일 영천경찰서에 고발했다고 밝혔다.

선관위에 따르면 A씨는 지난 3월 중순경, 특정 영천시장 예비후보자의 전과 기록을 사실과 다르게 기재한 설문조사용 판넬을 제작했다.

A씨는 이 판넬을 들고 재래시장과 경로당, 마을회관 등을 돌며 불특정 다수의 시민 550여 명을 대상으로 스티커를 붙이는 방식의 대면 여론조사를 무작위로 실시했다. 이후 조사 결과와 허위사실이 담긴 판넬 사진을 자신의 SNS에 3차례에 걸쳐 게시해 공표한 혐의를 받고 있다.

현행 공직선거법 제250조(허위사실공표죄) 제2항에 따르면, 후보자를 당선되지 못하게 할 목적으로 허위 사실을 공표할 경우 7년 이하의 징역 또는 500만 원 이상 3,000만 원 이하의 벌금에 처해질 수 있다.

또한, 여론조사 시 피조사자가 전 계층을 대표할 수 있도록 선정해야 한다는 규정(법 제108조)을 위반할 경우에도 3년 이하의 징역 또는 600만 원 이하의 벌금형에 처해질 수 있는 중대 범죄다.

영천시선관위 관계자는 "특정 후보에 대해 악의적인 허위 정보를 담은 판넬로 민심을 왜곡하고, 이를 온라인상에 유포하는 행위는 선거의 공정성을 뿌리째 흔드는 일"이라며 "앞으로도 가짜뉴스와 불법 여론조사에 대해 무관용 원칙으로 엄정 대응할 방침"이라고 강조했다.

With complaints surfacing one after another across Daegu and Gyeongbuk ahead of the local elections, there is a growing demand for thorough investigations by law enforcement authorities into illegal election campaigning that exacerbates voter confusion.
