군에 따르면 지난 2000년대초반부터 20여년간 산림보호구역으로 인해 발목이 잡혀 개발 관련 계획들이 검토단계에서 번번이 무산되어 왔다.

지난해 성주호 주변의산림보호구역 해제에 이어 이번 8월 22일 성주호관광지가 지정·고시됨에 따라 성주호의 수려한 자연 속에서 체류형호수 관광지를 조성할 수 있게 되었다.

이번 ‘성주호 관광지’ 지정은 성주군 1호 관광지로서 성주호의 탁월한 자연경관과 문화적 가치를 널리 알리며, 지역 경제 활성화에기여하고자 하는 성주군의 오랜 노력의 결실이자 성주군 미래 관광100년을 위한 성주호 관광지 조성의 첫 발을 내딛은 것으로서 의미가 깊다.

성주군 관광객 중 숙박 방문객 비율을 경상북도 평균 비율과 비교해보면 성주군의 경우 ‘22년 기준 9.1%이며, 경상북도 평균은 20.8%를 보이고 있어 성주군의 숙박 방문객이 경상북도 평균에도못 미치고 있었다.

특히 역사문화자원, 자연환경 등 다양하고 풍부한 관광자원을 보유하고 있으나, 관광자원의 점적인 개발에 편중되어 지역내관광자원 및 관광시설 간 연계가 부족하여 관광객이 당일 여행을 중심으로 단순 경유하는 관광 행태를 보이는 문제점이 있다.

이에성주호의 수려한 경관자원인 수자원, 숲 자원을 바탕으로 최신트렌드가 반영된 자연과 함께하는 온전한 휴식을 취할 수 있는 관광콘텐츠와 편의시설을 도입할 경우 성주군의 체류형 숙박관광객유입에 상당한 기여를 할 것으로 판단되며 관광객을 보다 오래 머물 수 있는 관광환경을 조성한다면 자연스럽게 성주군 내 관광자원을 연계하여 폭넓은 관광 활동을 유도할 수 있는 기반을마련할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

성주군은 관광지 지정 다음 단계로 관광지 내에 성주군만의 특색있는 관광시설 조성계획을 수립하고, 남은 행정절차와 과제를 단계적으로 수행하여 향후 경상북도에 조성계획 승인 신청을 할 계획이며, 조성계획이 승인되면 성주호 주변으로 먹을거리,볼거리, 즐길거리가풍성한 복합 관광지로 조성할 계획이다.

이병환 성주군수는 “성주호의 관광지 지정은 지역 주민들의 오랜 염원과 성주군의 끈질긴 노력이 만들어낸 결과이며, 앞으로 성주호를중심으로 다양한 관광 인프라를 확충하고, 산악 및 수변 체험프로그램을 개발하여 성주군의 미래 관광산업을 책임지는 중심지로 만들 것이다”라고 밝혔다.
