이날 수확한 벼는 농촌진흥청이 고영양·고품질 품종으로 선정한 정부 보급종 ‘해담’으로, 병해충에 강하고 밥맛이 우수한 것이 특징이다. 이에 따라 이번 추석 차례상에는 용암면에서 갓 수확한 햅쌀이 오를 전망이다.
용암면은 벼 재배 면적이 약 152ha에 달해 성주군 10개 읍·면 가운데 두 번째로 넓으며, 쌀 전업농 25명이 활동 중이다. 못자리 상토 보조량만 6,700포에 이를 정도로 참외와 더불어 대표적인 농업 생산지로 자리매김하고 있다.
이날 현장을 찾은 이병환 성주군수는 직접 콤바인을 운전하며 농민들과 수확의 기쁨을 함께했다. 이 군수는 “올해 집중호우에도 불구하고 대풍을 맞게 돼 더욱 뜻깊다”며 “고품질 쌀 생산에 힘써주신 농민들께 감사드린다. 안전하고 풍성한 수확기를 보내시길 바란다”고 격려했다.
한편, 이날 수확한 첫 벼는 도정 후 기부돼 추석을 앞두고 지역 내 저소득층 등 소외계층에게 전달될 예정이다.
