【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=경주시의회는 11월 24일부터 25일까지 양일간 정희택·이강희 의원이 파주시와 전주시의 성매매 집결지 정비현장을 방문했다고 밝혔다.

이번 방문은 경주시 내 성매매 집결지 문제 해결과 더불어 지역 재생 방안을 모색하기 위해 마련됐다.

파주시 성매매 집결지 ‘용주골’은 6·25 전쟁 중 미군 기지촌으로 형성된 곳으로, 2023년부터 강력한 행정대집행과 철거 작업이 진행 중이며, 전주시 성매매 집결지인 ‘선미촌’은 전북 최대 성매매 집결지라고 불렸으나, 2014년부터 추진된 문화재생사업으로 인해 2022년 해체됐다.

이번 방문에서는 ▲파주시와 전주시의 성매매 집결지 폐쇄 현황, ▲지자체와 관계기관 간 협력 체계, ▲전담부서의 역할, ▲성매매 종사자의 인권 보호 및 자립 지원 방안, ▲정비 후 도시재생 방안 등의 내용이 종합적으로 논의됐다.

정희택 의원은 “2025 APEC 정상회의 개최 이후 관광객이 급증하는 가운데, 경주시 도심에 위치한 성매매 집결지의 시급한 정비가 필요하다”고 밝히며, “성매매 집결지 정비를 위한 전담팀 마련 등 실질적 방안이 마련돼야 한다”고 설명했다.

이강희 의원은 “성매매 문제 해결을 위해서는 지역 주민과의 소통과 공감이 매우 중요하다”면서, “성매매 종사자와 지역사회가 함께 협력하여 따뜻한 지원과 변화를 만들어야 한다”고 말했다.

Gyeongju City Council Conducts On-Site Inspection of Prostitution District Redevelopment Projects in Paju and Jeonju

The Gyeongju City Council announced that Council Members Jeong Hee-taek and Lee Kang-hee visited the redevelopment projects in Paju and Jeonju on November 24th and 25th.

The visits were designed to address the prostitution district problem in Gyeongju and explore regional revitalization strategies.

The Paju prostitution district, "Yongjugol," was formed as a US military base during the Korean War. Since 2023, intensive administrative enforcement and demolition have been underway. Councilmember Jeong Hee-taek stated, "With the surge in tourists following the 2025 APEC Summit, urgent redevelopment of the red-light district located in downtown Gyeongju is necessary." He added, "Practical measures, such as the establishment of a dedicated team for the redevelopment of red-light districts, must be developed."

Councilmember Lee Kang-hee emphasized, "Communication and empathy with local residents are crucial to resolving the prostitution issue. Sex workers and the local community must work together to provide compassionate support and create change."
