공공심야약국은 보건복지부가 2022년부터 심야나 휴일 등 의료 취약 시간대에 의약품 구매와 복약지도를 제공하는 시범사업으로 시작됐다. 이후 올해부터는 보건복지부에서 지자체로 운영 주체가 변경되었으며, 경북도는 이미 시범사업에 참여한 9개소의 약국을 국비보조사업으로 지속 운영하고, 28개소를 추가 지정해 총 37개소로 확대했다.

유정근 경상북도 복지건강국장은 "공공심야약국 운영을 통해 도민들의 심야시간대 약품 구입에 따른 불편을 최소화하고, 의약품 오남용 예방과 안전한 투약을 위해 참여약국을 확대해 나가겠다"고 말했다.

경북도는 2021년 공공심야약국 도입의 필요성과 운영 방안에 대한 연구용역을 진행했으며, 2022년 3월에는 ‘경상북도 공공심야약국 지원 조례’를 제정해 양질의 공공보건의료서비스 제공을 위한 노력을 기울이고 있다.
