【브레이크뉴스 경북 】이성현 기자=경북 안동시가 2027년 열릴 ‘세계유산도시기구 아시아·태평양 지역(OWHC-AP) 총회’의 차기 개최지로 최종 선정됐다. 

안동시의 개최지 인정은 세계유산도시로서 보유한 역사적·문화적 가치와 국제행사 운영 역량을 국제사회로부터 인정받은 쾌거로 평가된다.

이번 총회는 지난 14일부터 베트남 후에시에서 개최됐다. 총회에는 아시아·태평양 지역의 OWHC 회원 도시 및 잠정 회원 도시 대표단, 세계유산 관련 전문가 등 100여 명이 참석했다. 

‘세계유산도시의 지속 가능한 발전을 위한 거주적합성’을 주제로 열린 이번 회의에서는 도시 내 세계유산의 보존과 활용, 그리고 지속가능한 도시정책 연계를 위한 다양한 방안이 논의됐다고 안동시는 밝혔다.

안동, 세계유산 도시 간 협력의 허브로

세계유산도시기구(OWHC)는 1993년 설립된 국제기구로, 유네스코 세계유산을 보유한 도시 간 협력을 통해 문화유산 보존, 도시 간 교류, 정책 공유 등을 촉진하고 있다. 이 기구는 2년마다 전 세계 총회와 지역별 총회를 열어 유산 도시 간 협력 방안을 논의한다.

안동시는 이번 총회에서 장철웅 부시장이 직접 유치 발표에 나섰다. 장 부시장은 안동이 “유네스코 3대 카테고리(세계유산, 인류무형문화유산, 세계기록유산)”를 모두 보유한 세계적으로 드문 도시임을 강조하고, 이러한 문화적 자산이 도시 정체성과 결합해 독보적인 경쟁력을 갖추고 있음을 소개했다.

또한 세계유산축전, 안동국제탈춤페스티벌, 국제학술포럼 등 다양한 대규모 국제행사를 성공적으로 개최해 온 경험을 통해 국제회의 운영 능력과 관광 인프라도 입증했다.

이러한 발표는 각국 대표단은 높은 관심을 이끌며 안동을 최종 개최 도시로 선정하는데 기여했다는 평가다.

Andong City, North Gyeongsang Province, has been selected as the next host city for the 2027 Organization of World Heritage Cities Asia-Pacific Regional General Assembly (OWHC-AP).

Andong's selection as the host city is considered a significant achievement, demonstrating international recognition of its historical and cultural value as a World Heritage City and its capacity to host international events.

The General Assembly was held in Hue City, Vietnam, from the 14th to the 16th. Approximately 100 participants, including representatives from OWHC member and provisional member cities in the Asia-Pacific region and World Heritage experts, attended the meeting.

The meeting, held under the theme "Livingability for the Sustainable Development of World Heritage Cities," discussed various measures for the preservation and utilization of World Heritage sites within the city and for linking them with sustainable urban policies, according to Andong City.

The Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC), established in 1993, is an international organization that promotes cultural heritage preservation, intercity exchange, and policy sharing through cooperation among cities with UNESCO World Heritage sites. The organization holds biennial global and regional general assemblies to discuss cooperation measures among heritage cities.

Andong City Vice Mayor Jang Cheol-woong personally announced its bid at this general meeting. He emphasized that Andong is a rare city globally possessing all three UNESCO categories (World Heritage, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and Memory of the World) and that these cultural assets, combined with the city's identity, create a unique competitive edge.

Andong also demonstrated its international conference management capabilities and tourism infrastructure through its successful hosting of various large-scale international events, including the World Heritage Festival, the Andong International Mask Dance Festival, and the International Academic Forum.

This announcement attracted significant attention from delegations and contributed to Andong's final selection as the host city.

This successful hosting of the General Assembly reaffirmed Andong's international standing as a World Heritage City. It is particularly significant because it lays the foundation for its future growth as a hub for World Heritage conservation cooperation.

Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang stated, "Hosting this General Assembly is a significant achievement, demonstrating international recognition of Andong's World Heritage value and commitment to international cooperation." He added, "By successfully hosting the General Assembly in 2027, we will promote Andong's city brand to the world and foster regional cultural development and international exchange."
