경북 최초의 이차전지 전시회인 이번 엑스포의 주제는 ‘Beyond Batteries, Powering Tomorrow(배터리를 넘어, 미래를 이끌다)’다.

에코프로는 이번 전시에서 △기술존 △친환경존 △지역상생존 △글로벌존 등 총 4개 구역으로 부스를 구성해 기업 비전과 성과를 소개한다.

‘기술존’에서는 양극재 및 미래 소재 개발 현황을 다룬다. 에코프로가 강점을 가진 하이니켈 양극재뿐 아니라, 중저가 시장을 겨냥한 미드니켈 양극재와 LFP 양극재 개발 상황을 공개한다.

특히 전고체 배터리 핵심 소재인 고체전해질 관련 기술과 경제성이 높은 소디움배터리(SIB) 양극재, 흑연 대신 실리콘을 활용하는 실리콘 음극재 등 차세대 배터리 소재 기술이 집중 소개된다.

‘친환경존’에서는 에코프로가 최초로 구현한 친환경 순환 공정인 ‘클로즈드 루프 시스템(Closed Loop System)’을 집중적으로 알린다. 이는 리튬, 전구체, 양극재, 재활용으로 이어지는 이차전지 양극 소재 전반의 친환경 생산 시스템이다. 에코프로는 이 시스템을 통해 지속 가능한 배터리 순환 생태계를 구축한다는 비전을 실천하고 있다.

‘지역상생존’은 지방 중소기업에서 대기업으로 성장한 에코프로의 지역 경제 활성화 기여 사례를 조명한다. 에코프로는 2017년부터 포항 영일만산단에 대규모 캠퍼스를 구축하며 현재까지 약 3조 원 이상을 투자했다. 또한 전체 임직원 3,600여 명 중 90% 이상을 지역 인재로 채용하며 지방 소멸을 막고 기업과 지역 사회가 동반 성장하는 모델을 구축했다.

‘글로벌존’에서는 2025년을 '글로벌 진출의 원년'으로 선포한 에코프로의 해외 프로젝트가 소개된다. 에코프로는 현재 아시아, 유럽, 북미 3개 대륙 5개 도시(오창, 포항, 인도네시아 술라웨시섬, 헝가리 데브레첸, 캐나다 베캉쿠아)에 거점을 두고 다양한 양극재 수요에 대응 중이다.

특히 국내 양극재 기업 최초로 유럽에 구축한 헝가리 데브레첸 생산 공장은 연말 준공을 앞두고 있으며, 유럽을 넘어 글로벌 시장 공략의 전략적 거점이 될 예정이다.

양극재 주요 원료인 니켈 확보를 위한 인도네시아 프로젝트도 핵심 내용이다. 에코프로는 1단계로 IMIP(인도네시아 모로왈리 산업단지) 내 니켈 제련소 4곳에 약 7,000억 원을 투자해 수익성과 사업 포트폴리오 확대를 달성했다.

2단계는 IGIP(인터내셔널 그린 산업단지)에서 진행되며, 인도네시아 국영기업 등 글로벌 기업들과 합작법인(JV)을 설립해 추진한다. 2단계에서는 원료 제련부터 전구체, 양극재, 배터리 셀 생산까지 한 곳에서 이루어지는 통합 산업단지를 선도적으로 이끌 계획이다.

이동채 에코프로 창업주는 “이번 행사는 포항이 대한민국을 넘어 세계 배터리 산업의 중심으로 도약하는 뜻깊은 자리”라며 “에코프로는 포항의 대표 기업으로서 지속 가능한 혁신과 지역 상생을 실현하며 미래 세대를 위한 친환경 기술 개발에 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

EcoPro Presents 'Closed Loop' and Global Vision at Pohang Expo

EcoPro will participate in the "International Battery Expo 2025 Pohang," held at the POSTECH Gymnasium from the 3rd to the 5th, showcasing its unique technological prowess and global management strategy developed in Pohang.

The theme of this expo, the first secondary battery exhibition in Gyeongbuk, is "Beyond Batteries, Powering Tomorrow."

EcoPro will present its corporate vision and achievements through four zones: the Technology Zone, the Eco-Friendly Zone, the Regional Coexistence Zone, and the Global Zone.

The Technology Zone will cover the development of cathode materials and future materials. EcoPro will present its strengths in high-nickel cathode materials, as well as mid-nickel cathode materials and LFP cathode materials targeting the mid- to low-end market.

In particular, the event will highlight next-generation battery material technologies, including solid electrolytes, a key component of all-solid-state batteries; cost-effective sodium-ion battery (SIB) cathodes; and silicon anodes, which utilize silicon instead of graphite.

The "Eco-Friendly Zone" will highlight EcoPro's first eco-friendly circular process, the "Closed Loop System." This system encompasses the entire production process of secondary battery cathode materials, from lithium, precursors, cathodes, and recycling. Through this system, EcoPro is realizing its vision of building a sustainable battery circulation ecosystem.

The "Local Coexistence Zone" will highlight EcoPro's contribution to the local economy, having grown from a local SME to a major corporation. Since 2017, EcoPro has invested over 3 trillion won in building a large-scale campus in the Yeongilman Industrial Complex in Pohang. Furthermore, by hiring over 90% of its approximately 3,600 employees from the local community, EcoPro has prevented the extinction of local communities and established a model for the mutual growth of companies and local communities.

The "Global Zone" showcases EcoPro's overseas projects, which have declared 2025 the "first year of global expansion." EcoPro currently operates bases in five cities across three continents—Ochang, Pohang, Sulawesi, Indonesia; Debrecen, Hungary; and Bekancua, Canada—to meet diverse cathode material demands.

Notably, the Debrecen, Hungary production plant, the first of its kind for a Korean cathode material company in Europe, is expected to be completed by the end of the year and is expected to serve as a strategic base for expanding beyond Europe and into the global market.

An Indonesian project to secure nickel, a key raw material for cathode materials, is also a key focus. In Phase 1, EcoPro invested approximately KRW 700 billion in four nickel smelters within the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), achieving profitability and expanding its business portfolio.

Phase 2 will be implemented at the International Green Industrial Park (IGIP) and will be pursued through joint ventures (JVs) with global companies, including Indonesian state-owned enterprises. In Phase 2, we plan to pioneer an integrated industrial complex where everything from raw material refining to precursor, cathode, and battery cell production will take place in one location.
