에코프로는 22일 서울 서초구 에코프로 서울사무소에서 박석회 에코프로씨엔지 대표, 정회림 에코프로 경영전략실장, 이경민 SK온 사업개발실장 등이 참석한 가운데 ‘배터리 순환 생태계 업무협약’ 및 블랙파우더(BlackPowder) 공급계약을 체결했다고 24일 밝혔다.

블랙파우더는 이차전지 스크랩(불량품)과 폐배터리를 파쇄해 만든 검은색 가루로, 리튬·니켈·코발트·망간 등 주요 금속 성분이 농축돼 ‘배터리의 원유’로 평가받는다.

이번 계약에 따라 에코프로씨엔지는 SK온의 미국 법인 SK배터리아메리카(SKBA)로부터 폐배터리 스크랩 기반 블랙파우더를 공급받는다. 공급 물량은 월 200톤 규모이며, 계약기간은 올해부터 2029년까지 총 5년이다. 이를 통해 에코프로씨엔지는 미국 원료 공급망을 확보하고 포항에서 양극재를 생산해 다시 SKBA에 재공급할 계획이다.

양사는 이번 협약을 바탕으로 폐배터리 리사이클부터 양극재까지 이어지는 배터리 순환 생태계를 구축하고, 사업 대상 소재와 지역을 확대해 글로벌 폐배터리 재활용 밸류체인을 공고히 할 계획이다.

에코프로씨엔지는 전처리(건식)와 후처리(습식) 공정을 모두 갖춘 폐배터리 리사이클 전문기업이다. 전처리 공정에서는 폐배터리를 방전·해체하고 불순물을 제거해 블랙파우더를 생산하며, 후처리 공정에서는 블랙파우더를 황산에 녹여 유가 금속을 직접 추출한다.

이경민 SK온 사업개발실장은 “전기차 시대를 맞아 순환 생태계 리사이클 사업모델 구축이 배터리 밸류체인 내 기업 경쟁력의 핵심으로 부상하고 있다”며 “앞으로 배터리 공급망 자립도를 높이는 동시에 급변하는 시장 환경에 유연하게 대응할 수 있도록 체질을 강화하겠다”고 말했다.

박석회 에코프로씨엔지 대표는 “이번 장기 공급 계약으로 셀, 양극재, 전구체, 리튬 등 이차전지 사업 전반에 걸친 협력 비즈니스모델을 완성했다”며 “차별화된 리사이클 기술력을 기반으로 원료 공급처를 다양화할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.

Under this agreement, EcoPro C&G will receive black powder derived from used battery scrap from SK On's US subsidiary, SK Battery America (SKBA). The supply volume is 200 tons per month, and the contract period is five years, from this year to 2029. Through this agreement, EcoPro C&C plans to secure a US raw material supply chain and produce cathode materials in Pohang, which will then be resupplied to SKBA.

Based on this agreement, the two companies plan to establish a battery recycling ecosystem spanning from waste battery recycling to cathode materials. They will also expand the scope of their business and expand the scope of their materials to solidify the global waste battery recycling value chain.

EcoPro C&C specializes in waste battery recycling, with both pre-processing (dry) and post-processing (wet) processes. In the pre-processing process, waste batteries are discharged and dismantled, impurities are removed, and black powder is produced. In the post-processing process, the black powder is dissolved in sulfuric acid to directly extract valuable metals.

Lee Kyung-min, Head of Business Development at SK On, said, "With the advent of the electric vehicle era, establishing a circular ecosystem recycling business model is emerging as a key competitive edge for companies within the battery value chain." He added, "We will strengthen our structure to increase the self-sufficiency of the battery supply chain while also flexibly responding to the rapidly changing market environment."

Park Seok-hoe, CEO of EcoPro C&G, stated, "With this long-term supply contract, we have established a collaborative business model covering the entire secondary battery business, including cells, cathode materials, precursors, and lithium. We plan to diversify our raw material suppliers based on our differentiated recycling technology."
