에코프로는 22일 충북 청주시 오창 본사에서 창립 27주년 기념식을 열고, 국내 오창·포항 사업장과 헝가리·인도네시아·캐나다 등 해외 사업장을 잇는 글로벌 생산체제를 본격 가동하겠다고 밝혔다.

이동채 에코프로 창업주는 기념사에서 “지난 27년이 도전과 개척의 역사였다면, 앞으로의 27년은 혁신과 글로벌 리더십의 역사가 될 것”이라며 “세계가 인정하는 친환경 이차전지 선도기업으로 거듭나자”고 강조했다.

■ 해외 프로젝트 본격화…국가대표 K-배터리 소재기업 도약

에코프로는 헝가리 데브레첸에 국내 기업 최초로 양극재 생산 공장을 구축했으며, 인도네시아 니켈 제련소 투자 등 해외 프로젝트를 통해 글로벌 경쟁력을 강화하고 있다.

회사는 2022년부터 인도네시아 술라웨시섬 IMIP(모로왈리 산업단지) 내 QMB(지분 9%), 메이밍(9%), ESG(10%), 그린에코니켈(38%) 등 4개 제련소에 약 7000억 원을 투자했다.

이를 통해 니켈 중간재인 MHP(Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate)를 안정적으로 확보하고, 제련 자회사 편입 시 연간 약 1800억 원의 이익이 기대된다.

헝가리 데브레첸 남부 산업단지 내 44만㎡ 규모의 양극재 공장도 시험 가동에 들어갔다. 연간 5만4000톤의 생산 능력을 갖춘 이 공장은 국내 양극재 기업 최초의 유럽 현지 생산기지로, 에코프로비엠이 운영을 맡는다.

이동채 창업주는 “1998년 서울 서초동의 작은 사무실에서 단 한 명의 직원과 시작한 회사가 이제는 세계로 뻗어나가고 있다”며 “불가능을 가능으로 만든 도전의 에너지가 오늘의 위기를 기회로 바꾸는 원동력”이라고 말했다.

에코프로는 1998년 교토의정서 채택을 계기로 환경사업의 중요성을 인식한 이동채 창업주가 설립했다.

초창기 주차장 컨테이너를 연구실로 삼고, 부직포와 접착제를 직접 손으로 발라 케미컬필터를 제작하는 등 ‘무모한 도전’을 이어왔다.

이 같은 노력 끝에 나노카본 탈취제 상용화, 케미컬필터·온실가스 저감장치 국산화 등 주요 기술 성과를 이뤘다.

2004년에는 제일모직과 함께 초고용량 이차전지용 양극소재 개발 국책과제에 참여하며 배터리 산업에 본격 진입했다.

Ecopro is the first Korean company to build a cathode materials production plant in Debrecen, Hungary, and is strengthening its global competitiveness through overseas projects, including investments in a nickel refinery in Indonesia.
