이 지사와 함께 이날 현장을 찾은 이재욱 농림축산식품부 차관, 김낙순 한국마사회장, 최기문 영천시장과 도의원, 시의원 뿐 아니라 사업 승인에 핵심역할을 한 것으로 알려진 이만희 국민의 힘 경상북도당 위원장도 참석해 성공적인 영천경마공원 조성방안을 협의했다.

이철우 지사는 “오래 기다려 온 사업인 만큼 영천경마공원이 세계적인 말산업(Horse Industry) 거점으로, 그리고 지역의 랜드마크로 자리 매김할 수 있도록 이만희 도당위원장과 농식품부, 한국마사회, 영천시 등 관계기관과 더욱 더 긴밀히 협력해 나가겠다”는 포부를 밝혔다.

한편, 영천경마공원은 2009년 12월 제4경마공원 입지후보지로 선정됐으나 사업 추진이 10여 년 간 지체되다, 2018년 10월 마사회 이사회 통과와 농림축산식품부 승인을 받으면서 다시 활성화됐다. 이어 지난 11월 9일 지역개발사업 승인을 받고 본격적인 경마공원 조성이 가능해졌다.

경북도는 그동안 농림축산식품부와 행정안전부, 국토교통부, 이만희 국회의원, 한국마사회, 영천시 등 관련기관 간 지속적으로 협력하면서  55여개의 관계부서 협의를 모두 완료하고 심의를 통과시켰다.

영천시 금호읍과 청통면 일원 145만여㎡(44만평) 부지에 총 3천659억원이 투입되는 이곳에는 힐링승마원과 수변공원, 가족캠핑장 등 시민 휴식시설이 오는 2025년까지 조성될 예정이다.

경북도는 “경마장이 본격적으로 운영되면 하루 평균 입장객이 5천명에서 최대 9천명, 연간 35만 명이 다년갈 것”이라며 “경마장과 함께 다양한 문화․레저시설 조성으로 지역의 새로운 명소로 부각될 것”일고 기대하고 있다.

Yeongcheon Horse Racing Park is a landmark that represents the area. On 18 July, Yi Cheol-woo, governor of Gyeongsang Province, visited the site of the Yongcheon Horse Racing Park, where all administrative procedures were completed by approving the regional development project.

Lee Jae-wook, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock And Food, Kim Nak-sun, Mayor Choi Ki-moon, mayor of Yeongcheon, and city councilors, as well as Yi Man-hee, chairman of the People's Power Gyeongsang North Provincial Party, who is known to have played a key role in approving the project, also attended and discussed ways to create a successful Yongcheon Horse Racing Park.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo expressed his ambition to cooperate more closely with Yi Man-hee, chairman of the Ruling Party, and with relevant agencies such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, The Korean Horse Society, and Yeongcheon City, so that Yeongcheon Horse Racing Park can become a global horse industry base and a local landmark.

On the other hand, Yeongcheon Horse Racing Park was selected as a candidate for the 4th Horse Racing Park in December 2009, but the project was delayed for more than 10 years, and was reactivated in October 2018 with the approval of the Board of Directors and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock And Food. Then, on November 9, the local development project was approved, and a full-fledged horse racing park was established.

In the meantime, The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock and The Ministry of Public Administration and Security, The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, The National Assembly of Imanhee, The Korean Horse Society, Yongcheon City, etc., have completed all 55 relevant departmentconsultations and passed deliberations.

A total of KRW 365.9 billion will be invested on the 145,000 square meters (440,000 pyeong) site of The Kumho Town in Yeongcheon City and cheongtong-cotton, and will be constructed by 2025 with public relaxation facilities such as healing equestrian center, waterfront park, and family campsite.

"If the racetrack is in full swing, the average visitor number will be 5,000 to up to 9,000 per day, and 350,000 people per year will be multi-year," and hopes that "the racetrack will become a new attraction in the area by creating a variety of cultural and leisure facilities."
