대구 중남구 보궐선거에 나서는 무소속 후보들간의 후보단일화가 사실상 무산됐다. 중남구 보궐 선거에 무소속으로 출마하는 후보는 임병헌,도건우, 도태우, 주성영 네 사람이다.

가장 먼저 후보단일화를 주장했던 도건우 후보에 이어 주성영 후보도 자신의 출마 기자회견에서 공식적으로 무소속 후보 단일화를 제안하면서 급물살을 탈것으로예상됐지만  이제까지 이들의 단일화를 위한 구체적 움직임은 사실상 전무했다. 지역정가는 이같은 후보들의 움직임을 두고 단일화는 쉽지 않다는 분석을 내놓았다. 정치권의 분석은 4일 확실하게 맞아 떨어졌다.

대구경북인터넷기자협회가 4일 오후 실시한 대구 중남구보궐선거 국회의원 후보자 토론회에서는 무소속 후보 단일화와 대구시청 이전과 같은 지역 현안 문제가 대두됐다. 특히, 무소속 단일화에 대하여 무소속 후보들은 저마다 다른 생각을 내비치면서 돌파구 찾기가 쉽지 않을 것임을 가늠케 했다. 

후보 단일화 첫 포문은 도건우 후보가 열었다. 도건우 후보는 임 후보가 최근 배포한 보도자료에서 실무자들의 접촉이 전혀 없었다고 한 사실이 허위사실이라며 실무자간 나누었던 카톡 내용 등을 공개했다. 임 후보자가 단일화를 촉구하고 있지만 겉과 달리 속으로는 단일화 의지가 전혀 없음을 증명하려 한 것으로 보인다.

이에 대하여 임병헌 후보는 “실무자 몇 번 왔다 갔다 하더라도 도 후보가 진정성이 있었다면 저에게 전화하든지, 서류를 보내던지 해야 했지만 전혀 그런 사실이 없었다”며 맞받아쳤다. 

그러다 토론회가 막바지로 치달을 즈음, 단일화의 사실상의 키를 쥐고 가고 있는 임병헌-도건우 후보가 단일화의 진정성을 두고 재격돌했고, 설전이 이어지는 상황에서 임 후보는 “(내가) 단일화를 하자는 것은 도 후보 혼자와 하자는 게 아니다. 네 사람 전체가 하자는 얘기다. 2명(임병헌-도건우)에 그친 무소속 후보 단일화는 모양새가 좋지 않다. 오늘이 사전투표일인데....  어떤 사람은 안되고 어떤 사람만 하고 이것은 맞지 않다. 두 사람간 단일화는 맞지 않는다고 생각한다”며 반대 뜻을 나타냈다.  

이 같은 발언은 후보 단일화에 있어 사실상의 마지막 퍼즐을 쥐고 있다고 할 수 있는 임 후보가 후보 단일화를 분명히 반대한 것으로 풀이된다.

I don't mean to do it. That means all of you will do it. The unification of two independent candidates (Byung-Hun Lim and Gun-Woo Do) is not in good shape. Today is early voting day.... Some people don't and only some people do it, and it's not right. I don't think the unification between the two is right."

Such remarks are interpreted as clearly opposed to the unification of candidates by Candidate Lim, who can be said to hold the final puzzle in de facto unification of candidates.
