주민등록번호 변경제도가 처음 도입된 2017년에는 신청건수가 연 700여 건이었지만, 2022년에는 연간 1,500여 건 이상으로 제도도입 6년 만에 신청 건수가 배 이상 급증하였다.

주민등록번호 변경제도는 주민등록번호 유출로 인해 생명·신체·재산 등에 피해를 보거나 피해를 볼 우려가 있는 경우 주민등록번호 변경위원회의 심사·의결을 거쳐 90일 이내에 주민등록번호 뒤 6자리를 변경하도록 규정하고 있다.
