대구 중구남구 국회의원 보궐선거에 출마한 국민의힘 성향 무소속 후보 단일화가 속도를 내지 않는 가운데 임병헌 후보가 28일 단일화를 거듭 촉구하고 나섰다.
임 후보는 이날 “도건우 후보와 주성영 후보는 자신들이 먼저 제안해 놓고 아무런 후속조치를 하지 않고 있다”며 “보수지지자들을 실망시키지 않기 위해서 보수 후보 단일화 논의를 진정성 있게 당장 진행하자”고 촉구했다.
임 후보는 빠른 진행을 위해 “후보단일화를 주장한 각 캠프에서 단일화 논의의 대표를 선임하고 단일화 방안과 그 구체적인 일정을 테이블에 올려놓자”고도 덧붙였다.
앞서 주성영 후보와 도건우 후보는 출마선언하며 무소속 후보의 단일화를 제안한 바 있었다. 다만, 도건우 후보는 출마 당시만 해도 “무소속 후보들의 표가 분산될 것이란 전제와 그로인해 민주당 후보가 어부지리로 당선될 것을 우려한 나머지 단일화를 제안했던 것“이라며 ”지금은 그럴 위험은 없는 것 같다. 굳이 단일화 필요성을 느끼지 않는다“고 한 발 물러난 상황이다.

임병헌 후보는 “지역발전을 위해서 보수 후보 단일화가 반드시 필요하다는 초심을 잃지 않을 것”을 도 후보와 주 후보에게 당부하면서 도태우 후보도 단일화 논의에 동참해주기를 촉구했다.
