도태우 예비후보는 앞서 유튜브 방송 등을 통해 “5·18 민주화 운동에 대해 굉장히 문제가 있는 부분들이 있고, 특히 거기에는 북한 개입 여부가 문제가 된다는 것이 상식”이라고 언급한 바 있다.

해당 발언이 문제가 되자 도 예비후보는 정제되지 않은 개인적 발언”이었다며 수습에 나섰지만 지역 정치권에서는 국민의힘이 도 예비후보의 공천을 철회해야된다는 요구가 빗발쳤다.

진보당 대구시당은 “도태우 후보는 명예훼손의 범죄로 따지면 초범이 아니라 상습범이며 순간적인 실언을 한 것처럼 머리를 한번 조아린 것으로 넘어갈 일이 아니다”라고 꼬집었다.

또한 “시스템 공천이니 뭐니 자화자찬 노래를 부르던 한동훈 위원장이 책임질 때”라며 “즉각 공천을 철회하고 국민 앞에 석고대죄하라”고 강조했다.

더불어민주당 대구시당 역시 “국민의힘은 정신차려야 한다”며 “돌고 돌아 제자리 공천이 되지 않기를 희망하며 이번에도 액션 정치로 끝나면 한동훈의 미래는 없다”고 경고했다.

지역의 시민단체에서도 도 예비후보의 공천 철회를 촉구하고 나섰다. 대구참여연대와 대구경제정의실천시민연합은 공동 성명을 통해 “국민의힘이 5.18 묘역에서는 민주주의 정신을 계승하겠다며 5.18정신 헌법 수록까지 찬성해 놓고, 이에 반하는 사람을 국회의원 후보로 버젓이 공천한 것은 표리부동”이라며 “대구이기 때문에, 이런 후보라도 공천만 하면 당선이라고 여기고 우격다짐하는 것이라면 대구 시민을 우민으로 여기는 것”이라고 질타했다.

비판 여론이 들끓는 가운데 한동훈 국민의힘 비상대책위원장은 11일 “도태우 후보 과거 발언 전반에 대해 국민 눈높이에 맞는 면밀한 재검토를 해달라”고 밝히며 공천 취소 가능성을 시사했다.

그러나 우리공화당은 오히려 국민의힘 공관위가 도 예비후보의 공천을 재검토하는 것을 강력히 비판했다.

조원진 대표는 “도태우 후보는 국민의힘의 공천시스템에 맞춰 경선을 통해 당원과 시민이 선택한 후보”라면서 “이러한 후보를 한동훈 비대위원장이 갑작스럽게 공천 취소 가능성을 시사하는 것은 국민의힘 시스템 공천에 문제가 있는 것”이라고 말했다.

그러면서 “도태우 후보는 그동안 자유민주주의 수호를 위해 노력해왔다, 또한 5.18 관련 논란이 된 발언에 대해서 진의 여부를 먼저 조사해야 한다.”면서 “대구시민과 당원들이 선택한 도태우 후보의 공천취소는 절대 안된다”고 말했다.

홍준표 대구시장도 한마디를 얹었다. 그는 SNS에 “자유민주 정당에서 경선으로 공천 확정된 사람을 과거 개인 생각을 이유로 공천 취소한다면 그건 자유민주 정당이 아니다”라고 주장했다.
