도태우 예비후보는 국민의힘 경선 과정에서 두 차례나 승리했으나 공천관리위원회의 호떡 뒤집기식 결정으로 최종적으로 공천이 취소됐다.

도태우 예비후보는 이날 배포한 보도자료를 통해 “경선 과정에서 저를 믿고 선택해주신 중구·남구 주민 여러분의 소중한 뜻을 받들어 대한민국 선진화를 향한 깃발을 사수하겠다”는 결의를 나타내며 무소속 출마 의지를 밝혔다.

그는 “법조인으로서, 정치인으로서 지금까지 대한민국 자유민주주의와 법치를 위해 모든 열정을 바쳐왔다”며 “건국과 호국, 산업화와 민주화의 정신을 이어받아 중구와 남구를 보수의 심장으로 되살리는 일에 앞장 서겠다”고 강조했다.

도 예비후보는 “앞으로도 대한민국 자유민주주의를 사수하는 보수의 일꾼으로, 보다 신중하고 뜨겁게 소임에 임할 것”이라며 “믿음과 기대를 저버리지 않는 당당한 국회의원이 될 수 있도록 다시 한 번 격려와 지지를 당부드린다. 4.10 총선에서 우리 중구·남구 주민의 선택이 결코 틀리지 않았음을 다시 한 번 검증받겠다.”고 밝혔다.

도태우 예비후보뿐 아니라 이날 지역 정가에서는 대구시민의 눈높이와는 전혀 맞지 않는 공천이 이뤄진 동구군위갑과 북구 갑 지역에 출마했던 에비후보 중 상당수가 무소속 출마를 고민하는 등 하루 온종일 국민의 힘 공천관리위원회의 막바지 부실 공천에 대한 원성이 줄을 이었다. 

동구군위갑 배기철 예비후보는 현수막을 무소속 현수막으로 바꾸는 작업에 돌입한 것으로 보아 이번 주말 무소속 출마를 선언할 것으로 예상된다. 현역인 류성걸 국회의원도 당원과 시.구의원, 지역원로들과 논의를 한 뒤 일요일쯤 최종 결정을 내릴 것으로 알려졌으며, 북구 갑 전광삼 후보 역시 하루 이틀 사이에 결정을 내릴 것으로 알려졌다. 이들의 무소속 출마가 강행으로 이어지면 결은 다소 다르지만 대구 지역 및 인근의 경산 지역 등이 한데 어우러지는 무소속 벨트가 형성될 것으로 전망된다. 

한편, 지역사회와 정가, 특히 오랜 시간 동안 국민의힘이라는 보수정당에서 당원으로 활동한 원로급 몇몇 인사들은 16일 모 국회의원 개소식에 만나 공관위 공천의 부당함을 토로했다. 이들 가운데 상당수는 “도태우 후보 등이 무소속으로 나서 당선되어 봐야 정신을 차린다”며 “대구를 무시해도 이만저만 무시하는 게 아니다. 이번 공천은 도저히 참을 수 있는 상황이 아니다. 시민들이 참을 수 없다며 들고 일어날 판이다. 본때를 보여줘야 청신 차린다”고 공천 심사에 대한 불만을 털어놨다.
