허성우 예비후보도 이날 추모식에 참석, 허주와의 추억을 공유했다. 허 예비후보는 1980년대 후반부터 10여 년간 허주의 참모로 활동하며 정치 여정을 같이했다. 

허 예비후보는 “고향 선배이자 정치 스승으로 요즘 같이 정치가 어려울수록 허주의 협상력과 포용력, 친화력, 정국에 대한 통찰력이 더욱 간절해진다”며 허주의 부재를 아쉬워했다.

허 예비후보는 “고인께서는 나를 위한 정치가 아니라, 국가와 민족, 지역을 위한 정치를 하라고 강조하셨다”라며 “고인이 행동으로 실천한 여러 가지 교훈이 내가 지향하는 정치의 근본이다. 그분의 정치철학과 고향 사랑 정신을 이어받아 구미발전에 전념해야 하지 않겠느냐”고 각오를 다졌다.

한편, 구미시 장천면 상장리 출신인 허주는 경북중·고와 경북대 문리대를 졸업하고 조선일보 편집국장, 5선 국회의원, 대통령비서실장 정무 1장관 등을 역임했다. 정치적 분석 역량을 바탕으로 잇따라 정권 창출에 성공해 킹메이커라는 별명을 얻기도 했다.
